This felt very similar to the quake in Fiordland in 2009 which was a M7.8 for which I was in Invercargil for.
Funnily enough that was also initially though to be a M6.6 before it was upgraded.
Side note: There are quite a few cars driving past my house on dyers pass road.

So, at 2:10am, they've finally started up the tsunami sirens in Chch.
I have some thoughts on the way this has gone down - but I'd trigger the GZ bad-language filters.
For those safe and wanting to see whats going on at Lyall Bay, here is a live stream on Youtube.

I've got a live feed from my driveway security camera and it's in South New Brighton but not public sorry.
FWIW Civil Defence always SCREAM Wolf over this... I fully expect the waves for Chch will be ten times smaller than they are warning against, like every other time in my living memory.
They might kill people by continuing to cry Wolf like this.

So yea the waves are no more than big swell in christchurch...
ChCh here. Concerned a phone alert showed casualties in Kaikoura, nothing on Stuff to show that. Newshub indicates that.
Here is felt solid but not that big, about a high 4 here, but it went for about a minute which was very surprising. Having then found it it was large 115 odd km away, that now makes sense. Up for the F1, but that can wait. Hope everyone is ok.
Has anyone got TV this morning in Wellington?
I got one news on here. There is A LOT of damage up and down the country, especially centered around Kaikoura.
SH1 is closed in places due to slips, rail transport is suspended everywhere south of Palmy Nth, Cook straight ferries are cancelled (wharves in Picton and Wellingtion are damaged).

No TV on Freeview Terrestrial at 8am. It was off air when I heard the civil defence siren in the Hutt at 3am? Not very good to have no TV in an emergency. Back to the radio!
So much for Civil Defence alerts. Knew nothing about earthquake until woke up and checked computer for email and see there has been an earthquake. Never felt it here at Papamoa. All the civil defence tests I have received texts and now a real possible threat and receive nothing. No texts no emails just nothing so whats the point having a system that doesn't work when real possible threat. No tsunami sirens here. ha ha just now received 3 texts all 8.18am telling to go higher ground next one downgraded and 3rd one saying just marine threat still exists. A bit late getting them now. So definitely leaves a lot to be desired.

Better to cry wolf in my view and let people assess the information. These events are pretty rare.

Same here in Whakatane. Got up at the usual time, eventually turned on computer and found an email from a friend in Texas saying nothing more than "You alright man?". Had to open the news to figure out what he was going on about!
