They add the cost of import directly on to the value so it doesn't get paid at customs, this is because the HDD is close to the threshold; I ordered bits from newegg and didn't get stung as they expect you to pay the customs and duty at the border rather than in advance.

Furthermore, if Customs doesn't end up charging you GST then Amazon will (eventually) refund it.

I hope its all less confusing when the Aussie arm starts up.

I've been doing a lot of maths this morning, comparing Amazon and Newegg, in USD, converted to NZD, and their checkout NZD, and everything comes out cheaper than buying local.

Leveraging off the experience of others, how do you prefer to buy things like 3.5" HDD's?

Which store, and in USD, or their pre-converted NZD?

Delete cookies?! Are you insane?!

I prefer new egg as generally its cheaper than Amazon, and I choose the store (currency) option depending on product as some products are not in the NZ category.... I just compared prices for a WD Red 6TB drive

Newegg was $331.50NZD inc. delivery

Amazon.com was $354.24NZD inc. delivery

PBTech was $382.95NZD via pickup.

Clearly newegg is the cheapest here and perfectly fine. For some reason, PBtech was cheaper than the other two for a 3TB WD Red drive... so again, it does depend on product... I would expect mainstream products to be comparable generally locally and internationally, but more expensive products to be cheaper internationally than locally.

Oh, I worked out Amazon to be NZ$321 delivered for the WDRed6TB. That was with them charging me in NZ$.

Back to the drawing board!

I buy a lot of boat bits of Amazon US. Tends to be about 40% cheaper after shipping - on a $500 part it's significant.

Aussie prices though are about the same as NZ.

So far you can order from any geographical amazon store from within the UK without issue, I used to do it all the time... And from here any will serve us... I doubt they would stop that.

Amazon shipping to NZ will put the cat amongst the pigeons for many retailers here in NZ, including mightyape and PBTech!

No real need for them to do that - the merchants themselves decide where they will ship to.

Thanks for reminding me about that as an option for boat stuff - never thought about Amazon. I need a new custom ski boat cover... but it comes to NZD$600 incl shipping from Amazon so would be subject to the bloody charges. I don't mind the GST to much but the customs charge is outrageous.

If Amazon setup here/Aus and apply GST and avoid the customs charge it will be a good thing.

If Amazon brings US prices to NZ I'll be stoked. Seems unlikely though - 110v is a form of geofencing for AC appliances.

You can buy a GPS in the US for half the price of NZ, but try using it outside of North America and it won't work.
