Happily, it's possible for our government to work on more than one thing at a time. Otherwise, if I had your attitude, I'd say that I'd rather we spent the millions planting trees because where I live there are plenty of felled hills that are useless for farming but have no trees on them, and I don't see anyone around my house committing suicide.

my son tried suicide but luckily he survived , many families are not so lucky but i m sure they will be glad that there are trees they can look at and hug instead of their children.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I'm glad he did, and I'm not belittling the issue: it's something that is important to me also. But that neither means there aren't other things that need to be addressed nor that we should focus on any one thing to the exclusion of all else. Our children need a world to live in, for example. And there are other children - who haven't tried to commit suicide - that are living in poverty and/or suffering abuse. Should we ignore them too, just to focus on one issue?

We are in the fortunate position that we don't need to, so you also don't need to make flippant remarks about how you didn't know we didn't have enough trees.

We are planning on planting ~200 trees this spring as a shelter-belt on my parents farm. #DoingOurBit #GreenNZ

We have been considering replanting a chunk of our property, too, but we need to fence it off first lest the sheep decide it’s tastier than all the boring grass.

It's good to see a healthy dose of scepticism & analysis based on numbers such as planting rates and land areas, but after the election is way too late to be asking how a party is going to achieve all their election year promises.

I have been doing a bit of reading and we are going to plant Italian Alder trees, fast growing, drought and wet resistant and a nitrogen "fixer". But have a similar problem with the cattle. Have to invest in some new "hot wire" fencing to help stop the buggers eating them!

We planted a belt of Italian Alders for our shelter belt also. We are in a high wind area and they were advised as able to cope with the wind. A couple are struggling a little bit, but most are going great and to be fair, the ones that are not are probably still suffering a bit because one of the sheep got in and munched them. (*Doh!*) Just a pity we didn't plant them 10 years ago rather than 2.

So anyway, yes: Italian Alders are a good decision.

Lots of the pine plantations around the Puhoi to Warkworth motorway extension are being felled right now. We assume all of that will be replanted with natives. But there are also a lot of areas locally that are useless for stock or crops that could be replanted without having to clear anything else first.

It's completely possible. India managed 66 MILLION in 12 hours. 100 million doesn't seem that many to plant in a year.

Easy when you can drum up 1.5 million volunteers and send them out with apparently no safety standards and plant on gently sloping land.

I disagree it's better than nothing. It's a false promise which is worse than nothing. There's already a shortage of forestry workers in NZ so who's going to plant these trees?

Seriously, of all the things to complain about... you people have a problem with an aspirational goal to plant more trees. Who cares if it's "possible"? If they only manage to plant 75 million a year, it's not like you have to declare the project a failure and bulldoze all the ones you already did.

It seems the new government is to be held to a somewhat more relaxed standard then the previous one.

There's already a shortage of forestry workers in Northland*, which happens to have the highest unemployment in NZ. So those unemployed and prisoners would presumably have to be forced to do this which I think is a good idea but most others would call it slavery and they have a point.

* Part of the reason for this is the mandatory drug testing requirement.

I think it's a nice, idealistic idea but completely impractical and unrealistic.

There's nobody around willing to do the planting for a start. Northland has a shortage of forestry workers despite high unemployment.

The government can't magic up a supply of workers but it could import them. Oh, now they can't.

Then you need the land...
