Can't you just apply for a new one as that doesn't require a referee? Call up and cancel your passport then apply for a new one (not sure if you have to cancel your passport first before you can apply for a new one)

You always need a referee bro.

Its easy, you just find any pleb. On renewal's they dont even need to sign it, you just need ot put in their passport number and name and DOB.

I guessed I lucked out. I took mine with my webcam and the first photo I thought I looked the prettiest in worked!

I had no problems but I did use a good camera on a tripod with flash to even out the lighting. If people study all the examples given about why photos can fail, then success is more likely without the need to get a commercial place to do the photo for you. The only trouble I had was to get the 4:3 aspect ratio exactly right and this did require the use of Photoshop for cropping to the right dimensions because my camera doesn't have the option of taking photos in a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Having said that, I think the photo rules are rather pedantic and nit-picking when you bear in mind the overall purpose of the photo.

Called up the Real Me and Passport office, paraphrasing what they said

"You still need a reference even if you have a verified real me; otherwise apply with an paper application with a cover letter explaining that you don't have a reference."

Something tells me its run by a gang of highly intelligent chimps hellbound on taking over the word as we know it.

In other news, haven't heard from my doc, so I am going that route of writing a letter and provide them with my ID information and everything, and if they still hassle me I am taking them and their bogus ref laws to court.

I didn't need a referee to get my first passport I just needed the details from my birth certificate.

So this means you need to apply for a new passport before your current one expires or else you need a referee?

Usually within a year of expiry. As far as I know, you always need someone to say you are who you say you are. But at least it is just another (current or recent) passport holder.

Clever chimps...they did catch the Mosad attempt to get NZ passports a few years ago.

All news we are meant to read, they are all in cahoots. But I told you they were 'highly intelligent' chimps, there are 3 parties, one writes the rules on their typewriter, the other picks up the phone, but is unaware of what the first one wrote on its rule book ie. "real me still isn't enough sorry", then there is a 3rd one thats going around inviting the mossad. and.....and.....and..wait for it.... I am somehow stuck in the middle..for whatever reason... these nuclear chimps are hellbound to take over.. if they already haven't...

...no problem.

If you think that's fun, I'm trying to get my daughters citizenship upgraded from Citizenship by Descent to Citizenship by Grant.

Backstory: My wife and I (both NZ citizens) had our first child in Melbourne in 09.  Because of our NZ citizenship the daughter is not eligible to be an Australian citizen and had to apply to be a NZ 'citizen by descent', shes eligible because both parents were NZ citizens.  However if she (in the future) has a child in Australia with a NZ citizen, that child is not eligible for NZ 'citizenship by descent' as she is not a 'full citizen'.  After living in NZ for 5 years she is now eligible to upgrade her citizenship to Citizenship by grant, which alleviates this potential future situation.

So while filling in the forms we notice we are required to send originals (not verified copies) of the following documentation:

Her birth certificate from Australia (they would have this on file from the original citizenship by descent application).

Her current NZ citizenship certificate (issued by them)

Her current NZ passport (issued by them)

My current NZ passport (issued by them)

Her mothers current NZ passport (issued by them)

On top of this we still have to have someone with a current NZ passport witness the photographs etc.

I'm really hoping that courier package doesn't go missing....

That is really strange. I renewed mine without needing a referee, just by using the verified real me. Maybe they let me because my passport had not expired, it had about 3 months left?

Hey guys for future reference, posting this up here, So went the long route, got real me, applied to get my photo id taken, this is a must, went to get it done at the post shop and a weeks worth wait, then I had to actually find the page that allows you to apply through real me and not have an reference or anything. i believe this was the link https://www.passports.govt.nz/decisions/do-you-have-verified-realme-account-not-just-a-login/

Had own photo taken with the specs but they kept coming up with excuses about one thing or another so after the 3rd or 4th try I had a nice photo taken from the post shop, some of them have really nice cameras vs crap shooters some professional camera houses use. anyway, all done now and got my passport in the mail the past week. very happy to have found this method works well. only if they made it simpler to apply without having to find the proper link (above) and what was more funny I found that when I called them originally they had no clue you could apply through real me. anyway after almost a month of back and forth, Its over. hahaha.

All done now! let the traveling begin! :-)

It's not actually that hard at all - the OP seems to have deliberately made it harder. All you need to do is go to https://www.passports.govt.nz and click on "Apply for your passport online" - it guides you through a series of Yes or No questions (all pages that start with https://www.passports.govt.nz/decisions - all the OP did was find a page halfway through the wizard!) and then gives you the thumbs up and sends you to RealMe login to complete the process.

The world is a vast and wonderful place to explore. While NZ is pretty cool and all, it really is small in comparison to whats out there.

+1 for RealMe verified and online passport request/renewal. Came in 2 days via courier.

facepalm. no one makes things harder, its just bureaucrat nonsense, the system is designed by monkeys, even the camera shops are crap. NZ Post office was most helpful and knew more than the clowns at wellington when I called em, they said no such thing as a real me Id that can get you a passport without a 3rd party civilian signing some governments paper to prove I exist, I insisted and called bs. went through real me and what do ya know, when went to apply (and a good number of folks had this issue previously reported online) it wont let me without a reference, I didn't find something half way through, the system is broken as hell, I found that link later and it worked. In total I had to apply 3 times, had to take 4 sets of photos (post shop lighting) but finally got there saying a big you know what to the blood sucking monkeys in the beehive. it a crap fight mate, I am just glad I got it done ;)

+1 Anybody looking to get their passport done, Go get RealMe, apply to Get your Photo ID and Address(?) verified, head over to the PostShop and meanwhile have a nice photo taken as well and have it sent to your email. Then wait for the real me to be verified by the Internal Affairs monkeys..mine took 1 week to get verified no kidding - some folks report 2 days, (I dont know, maybe they prefer certain colored eyes ;)) Next go and apply through that link I put up there, it will work. Long as the photo is right, ought to take you 7 - 10 days from there on. Overall a painless process, just finding all the info / disinfo was he pita.
