Trying to renew my darn passport for travels this year and everybody I know including my doctor has an expired passport, and to renew it I cant use a reference thats anyway related to me or does not have a current NZ Passport. Anybody got any workarounds to this?

If yours hasn't expired be referee for one of them, then they can return the favour.

Don't worry - expired passport is OK!

According to: https://www.passports.govt.nz/what-you-need-to-renew-or-apply-for-a-passport/identity-referee-witness-and-consent-for-a-child/

Who can be a witness or identity referee?

A person:

  • who is 16 years or older
  • has known you for more than one year, or since birth for a child under 12 months
  • has a valid New Zealand passport (this can be current or expired, but not lost, stolen or damaged)
  • is prepared to give personal details like their name, date of birth, passport number and
  • is contactable

They must not be:

  • related to you e.g. a cousin, parent, sister or brother
  • your partner or spouse
  • part of your extended family group
  • living at the same address

I didn't need a referee to get my first passport I just needed the details from my birth certificate.

So this means you need to apply for a new passport before your current one expires or else you need a referee?

? Can you "apply for a new passport" if you have an expired one? Or are you required to apply for a renewal rather than "new"?

It's been a couple of years, but I'm pretty sure that I "renewed" my expired passport. From memory that's cheaper than a "new" one anyway.

Edit: Sorry, misunderstood the question.

Renew costs the same as a new passport ($180)

Seems strange that they allow both but I would have thought the checking and validation for a new passport would be much stricter than for a renewal. I.e. not only requiring referees but that they would hunt them down and talk to them.

Quite a S***y thing that someone whos had a passport beforehand, photo id drivers license, registered their car, acc, and all mumbo jumbo into the system still needs an "reference" ha. what happens when somebody lets say has done everything right but has no reference, they cant travel or leave the country? ridiculous. seen this in all the common 'wealth'  countries.

/rant.

asked the doctor again and sent him the link, funny I think even hes been trying to renew his for a bit. lol

thinking about just putting up an ad somewhere for cash reward.

any takers?

Can't you just apply for a new one as that doesn't require a referee? Call up and cancel your passport then apply for a new one (not sure if you have to cancel your passport first before you can apply for a new one)

I take it your passport has expired?    I renewed mine while it was still valid, and provided a person has RealMe I.D., the real me that requires a visit to NZ Post to get a photo done, you won't need a referee.    I did mine about about 18 months ago.    At that time the Internal Affairs website was a bit of a mess and it took me a while to find the right start page for this type of application.   However, once I found the right page it was very easy & the new passport arrived very quickly by courier.

I dont know if I can, since mine is expired, but I did have real me a few years ago, I will try the real me option if it doesn't require a reference then I will go with it.

I renewed my expired passport online last year as well, it was a piece of cake.

Their online system analyses your photo so if it passes there no additional wait time

Anyone else find that the turn around time on new passwords is lightening quick these days?
