I am not a fan of winter as a rule, but my family and I took a holiday down in Wellington, and we popped into the Zoo for a good look around. It was a fantastic little break, and the weather, while not very winter like, was very welcome
Here's one of my favourite shots.. we were in an enclosure with Kea's
(not sure why the gallery the gallery software has rotated this image, sorry about this.. not sure how to fix it in here)
I shrunk!
(Actually, this was a Hobbit Chair, used in Lord of the Rings to emphasise the size difference between Hobbits and Humans. Clever camera work did the rest. The chair was reached by way of a Jetboat ride up the Dart River.)
Remains my only real Winter Holiday ever, and the last time my wife and I went anywhere notable without the childrenz in tow. :-)
Dunedin, where I spent many childhood Christmas celebrations but almost everything is just as good in winter. Dunedin summers are, as it happens, the closest to a winter anywhere else I've visited in NZ:hail several times in one day, sleet more than once, and snow once. But that only made it more interesting. Winters are crisp and dry by comparison.
Thomsons soft drinks, the aromatic perfumes of the Greggs and Cadbury factories wafted towards us in southerly, fishing in the harbour, the entire peninsular (penguins, seals, birds on the beaches), Sandymount (over a km of sandhill to run down), Portobello aquarium, the amazing museum, the art gallery at Logan Park we never tired of visiting, Olveston (a grand old house stuck in a century old time warp) and so on.
Best Winter holiday? Who holidays in Winter? I guess a staycation at home in Rotorua for me then :)
Taken a year ago not long after arriving from Auckland to live in Christchurch. First winter so we decided to take Miss 4 at the time to see the snow. Got this shot only because Google maps took us far off the beaten path enroute to the southern alps... only realised because the trip home was unfamiliar and much shorter. Thanks Google.
Bonus: we did Queenstown this year. Arrived with no snow over the mountain ranges, woke up to total blanket of snow over the ranges, so awesome to see from our bed.
The South Island is magical for its scenery and views.
Family reunion in Queenstown, 2007. Revisited the long-standing Chinese heritage in the area.
"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover
"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell
To escape from our winter I went to Fiji.
Got food poisoning from a restaurant in Port Denerau and was not feeling good on the 3/4 boat trip out to the island resort.
The idea was to snorkel and dive with manta rays but their season finished 4 days before I arrived.
Had the remnants of a cyclone tear up the tree in front of our bure and throw it against the building. (No damage or injuries apart from the tree).
Having said that, I had great food, really enjoyed talking with the locals and generally relaxed and had a good time. Oh yeah. Had my very first seaplane ride on the way back; that was cool.
A very memorable trip; in almost all respects. :-)
August 2013 Muri Beach Rarotonga. On a windy but beautiful day I got the marry the love of my life on the beach. It was raining and just misrable at Home in NZ. 5 Years on still the best Winter holiday I could imagine :-)
