Oops, let's try that again....

It's been about 25 years since I last went skiing, every year I say I make plans, and every year I don't manage to fit it in... Just a week at Mt Hutt would make up for a decade of crappy winters!

Finland. Christmas lights, snow, Glögi (hot spiced wine) would be one of my most memorable winter experiences away from home.

Best winter holiday was getting back to Europe for a family cold Christmas like in my childhood - and before hand in Salzburg and Vienna wandering the amazing Winter Markets, drinking mulled wine and listening to familiar carols in German.

I'm embracing the "notch"! Time for a replacement phone, my Meizu M3s got snow damaged recently but still working, just. So please "phone gods" make me win this! I promise to take it skiing in Mt Ruapehu!

Here's my baby!

I grew up in Michigan in the US. There was a hill nearby that is called "Dead Man's Hill" (I only recently learned it's called that because someone was lynched there, never knew), and we would go sledding down the hill. They had toboggans and a hot chocolate stand. Some of my fondest memories of winter come from sledding there and having some hot chocolate to warm your frozen fingers with. I kind of miss winters there, I don't really miss having to de-ice my car, but I do miss the first snowfall.

Here's a photo of the toboggan runs there

Och aye, it would have to be New Years in Edinburgh - Hogmanay, 1990. Way back when I could actually drink more than a couple of glasses of alcohol before either falling over or falling asleep (or both).

Also (well) before the time of smartphones - if only I could travel back in time with my new Huawei nova 3e.

If I could, I imagine a photo of me at that special time could very well be:

I honestly don't remember much other than trying haggis, and thinking it was actually pretty good!

While my usual favourite winter holidays have involved 'escaping' winter by heading North... (Auckland, Sunshine Coast, Thailand) this year I took a chance on the Mt Hutt First Timers package. Packed up into the Hilux on Friday night, spent the evening by the fire in Methven then up early to beat the rest of the Saturday traffic ready for the day of lessons which left me ready for more! Haven't quite turned it into a holiday yet but have definitely discovered a new joy of winter and looking forward to getting up there again soon.

Flying home for Chinese lunar new year past the Heavenly Mountains just beyond the Taklamakan Desert. Let's hope the central heating has been turned on when we land!

And at apartment level the same mountains looking over the city of Urumqi.

A trip from Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound for a couple days floating around the sound - had to wait for the guys to trigger an avalanche and clear it first

When I was a child I had an awesome winter family holiday in Queenstown. That was the only time I've ever been there. I must go back again someday...
