I go out of my way to do surveys. It is a little bit like voting but where only a few thousand people get to choose the government or their policies. I laugh at those that do not participate because i have read comments by all of you, complaining about one thing or another. If you want to influence government policies then you need to be heard.

Why can't they move it to an online format so people can complete it when it suits?

The length of the survey and the requirement to find receipts going back 12 months seems a bit over the top. Personally, I couldn't comply with that even if I wanted to - unless it's a really major purchase I don't keep those receipts. Plus, for a lot of small purchases, I just pay bu eftpos or cash, and don't even bother with reciepts. Fining me still wouldn't enable me to magic paperwork I don't have out of the ether.

I would do a short survey if it wasn't too intrusive and I could see a clear public benefit, and they were prepared to do it at a time that suited me not necessarily them, but this seems a bit over the top in terms of both intrusiveness and the time they seem to want.

Since they can compel me legally I would probably do it. But if I was doing it grudgingly and under duress, I wouldn't put a lot of stock in the accuracy of the answers I gave. My paperwork is sketchy, my eyesight and hearing can be a bit variable, and memory is an all too fallible faculty

Exactly right. Voting wise, very few enact the new Govt, whether its new or the last party. But I expect most of the new age PC conspiracy theorists here would be the first to complain for any Govt actions. Actions they more than likely did not participate in

Thats fair. Problem is you skew the results by getting more IT literate people than a fair cross section.

Three hours is too long, and there should be no need for receipts. If you are asked a question and you are honest, that answer should suffice. It also needs to be publicised. Ive never heard of this. It should be common knowledge as is the reason why.

The household survey is nothing compared to the abomination they subject businesses to. They expect for the whole year that you provide the chief statistician with internal financials almost more detailed than your accountant can supply.

I would have thought it would be reasonable to expect that the participant should be given a list of questions in advance so that they can judge whether they consider them to be unreasonably invasive and, if so, seek legal advice on exactly what they're obligated to disclose.
