He's a keyboard warrior. Little chance he gets away with speaking to, or about people like he does here, in the real world.

I have no trouble comphrehending Mike Hoskings written or spoken word. Whether I agree or not, is a different matter.

Back on topic, no, I wouldn't pay for NZH access.

Depends. I would not be interested in funding the various regular 'opinion' columns at all. I'd be interested in funding/subscribing other things but it does depend on sub level.

personally im in favour of this. let people read x articles a day free, after that paywall. if you use that service enough that you pass the amount of free ones, then pay for the content..

You'd think they'd have a set of icons at the bottom of each article to measure the reader's thoughts on it... I think they'd be shocked at the results.

You'd think they'd have a set of icons at the bottom of each article to measure the reader's thoughts on it... I think they'd be shocked at the results.

The problem is, that people with a pip against the Herald, would unlikely assess each article on it's merits, so the chances of getting an accurate assessment is low.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I believe that the NZME/Fairfax audience is generally not the type of people who would pay for premium content, however their web audience share is so large that maybe they only need a small share of that audience to be willing to dip into their wallets.

Ultimately if you want to help to fund quality journalism then you have the option of crowd funding Newsroom, but in terms of audience share their site is really failing to connect. Even RNZ's web offering has a relatively small audience share compared with NZME/Fairfax. Are New Zealanders really still interested in in depth journalism?

This is an interesting read published this week about NZ media site and web viewing figures.

It comments on how The Herald is getting longer engagement times and puts that down to the investigative reporting.

It also mentioned The Herald going paywall.

Interestingly the ODT is the number 3 news site in the country after Stuff and and The Herald.
The ODT talked about going paywall a couple of years ago but for whatever reason couldn't do it.

I have never liked the Herald. Back in the days when newspapers were still actual newspapers I didn't like it. I much preferred the Dominion Post. These days I do not read either paper and I certainly do not read Stuff. To answer the question, I cannot imagine any circumstance under which I would ever pay for anything from the Herald. Also not from Stuff. Those days are long gone.

Some of us are.

Enough of us to make it commercially viable? I hope so, but I'm not optimistic.

Except for traffic jams, plane crashes and moaning about road works, the National Party web site is the same thing as the NZ Herald these days.

I don't read either one of them.

Definitely won't *pay* for propaganda.
