When I lived in Darwin, Aus prior to moving over it was 30-35 at 100% humidity for 5-6 months of the year. Absolutely brutal with no escape even in the shade and it never dipped at night. Just non-stop heat and humidity.

Winter was nice by contrast. Lows of 14 and tops of 26-28 with no humidity.

After the heat from the previous summer, my opinion of air conditioning changed from a luxury to an essential. In less than a year, my house went from having 0 heat pumps to 6 heat pumps.

The power bill hasn't increased by anywhere near as much as what I thought it would either. And even if it had, it would still be worth it.

Last summer I was sitting in my van with the aircon running to escape the humidity.

Human body temp is ~37 degrees, so once you get north of that you really feel it, and combined with heavily humid you cannot sweat to cool as there is no evapotranspiration potential,

In those conditions heavy physical exertion can be fatal as you body is simply unable to cool itself...

Each of the two times I have been in New Orleans the same. It wasn't muggy as we say here, the air was wet

Hanoi can be like that. Step outside and your clothes will be soaked in moments, just from the humidity.

There is a Japanese drink called, in inimitable Japanese style, Pocari Sweat which is commonly available in Asia (but never seen it here) and it is without a doubt the best drink for weather like that I have ever found.

I'm glad our HRV has a smart in it so when the roof cools down overnight it sends cool air down if its warmer in our hallway. Feeling tempted still to get the summer kit addon (ducts to the southern side of the house to pull in cooler air)

Pocari Sweat has to be the best thing ever invented for hot/humid climates. I was in Japan in 2016 with 38+ temps and 80+ humidity. This stuff saved me.

It's been a very pleasant 20 degrees in Christchurch today - when the powers that be redesign the Universe maybe they could give Planet Earth that temperature on a permanent basis!

Yep pity it’s cloudy. Is this heatwave overblown in the media? 30 isn’t sweltering. 34 is hot but it’s not shocking.

Surprised the media haven't called it something like a 'heatbomb', like they do when there is a weather bomb. Seems to be the big story with some. Guess it is what is currently getting the clicks.

By definition it is a heatwave that parts of NZ are experiencing. That is a sustained period of hot waether which is several degrees above the average for that time and that area.

Many years ago I went to see my dad in North Queensland. August so their 6 weeks of winter. He finished work at the sugar mill, we walked to the pub. It was 25, me in Jandals t shirt and shorts. Him in trousers and jacket. Still funny to think of that. Took my two wee girls camping at Grasstree Beach. Only us swimming
