MikeB4: I would like to see the sale to the public stopped and if we are going to have public displays these moved to a time more relevant to New Zealand/Aotearoa Such as Matariki.

Nobody had heard of Matariki until a few years ago, so I don't see how that's even remotely relevant. Both Matariki and Diwali I learned about through my involvement with pyrotechnics. Wellington has already moved their public display to Matariki. Auckland does nothing, and will continue to do so.

I don't mind the shift personally. I don't particularly care if it's Matariki, Guy Fawkes, or some other random day, but it's nice to have the big public fireworks at a time when it get's dark earlier, makes life easier with tired grumpy children.

Agreed with the point about children but given Wellington's climate I expect cancellation or postponements every 2nd year.

Why not celebrate Wellington Anniversary day with an annual display on that Saturday night at 9.30ish. The nippers would have been on holiday for a month or so and this would give parents the chance to manage their rest/sleep schedule around those days so they can attend in a non-grumpy, non-tired state.

Sunset 8:53pm, last light 10:05pm, so your 9:30pm suggestion is good.

With Matariki it means summer and winter fireworks.

For myself, I am thankful that I have the opportunity to be reminded how difficult it was to develop parliamentary democracies. While I don't see democracy as ideal, I do think that we fail to value what we have and we would certainly value it more if someone tried to destroy our houses of parliament while the government is sitting. Such an attack is no longer an unthinkable scenario.

We take so much for granted. The value of the celebration has largely been lot as is the case with most public celebrations and public holidays. NZers are generally bad at celebrating the things that we most value. And we're generally good at focusing on the negative and bringing down (besmirching) things of value, as the OP does. Guy Fawkes is no celebration of terrorism - we celebrate that it was thwarted - and it isn't comparable to the Christchurch massacre which didn't target the central institution of NZ.

I don't care whether we have Guy Fawkes day or not. If we get rid of it then I think that we should have something that emphasises the value of our parliamentary democracy independent of Waitangi Day (/NZ Day). And I definitely want to keep fireworks.

It wont get us past the key issue. We all want everything, it needs to suits us, and there is not enough money to have it all now. So we blame those we voted in. If they increased taxes to pay for it, we complain. Or, we complain as they haven't fixed everything yesterday. When we bleat about each party, its just the order that everything is not happening, differs slightly

Matariki for me is a time of contemplation. Ending it with fireworks doesn't seem quite right to me. I am no expert in these matters.

I don't quite get your point. Are you saying random selection would be worse than what we have now ? (MMP).
