The high protein meat diet is what made homo sapiens what we are now. The protein feed our brains and made it grow. We were successful because we are an omnivore.

This myth gets passed around a lot. We were successful because we are ruthless. Chimpanzees are also known to hunt and consume meat when they can, though it makes up a small proportion of their diet. Today's food choices, both carnivorous and vegetarian, cannot be compared to the opportunistic scavenging of bone marrow from the kills of other predators. What made us what we are now was the invention of farming and the production of reliable food supplies. Meat was just an extra benefit of that.

There's a site called mediabiasfactcheck.com which can sometimes be useful in helping to evaluate the source material you're looking at. For instance this site rates nutritionfacts.org as "a moderate pseudoscience source due to exaggerated health claims." The analysis/bias section in relation to nutritionfacts is brief but interesting reading.

Harriet Hall isn't exactly a neutral source on the topic. Tends towards setting up straw men, attacked circuitously via weasel words with a finger on the scale, while claiming the other party is disingenuous. There's certainly plenty of woo to be found all round in this arena, and the Ben Goldacre quote on distrusting certainty should always apply.

I must send Sir David Attenborough a note about this being a myth

If meat makes smart, tigers must have the biggest brains on the planet!

Meat doesn't need to "do" anything. It tastes good and surely that's all that is required?

You can get protein and carbs and vitamins from anywhere. Ask the cows. Some aspects are lacking from plants, some are lacking from animal meat. Cholesterol and vessel inflammation, animals do have that down pat.

There isn't any firm consensus on the topic, let alone ascribing single factor causality.

Attenborough doesn't exactly have a good record on the topic with his recent take on the aquatic ape.

Thats the issue. Bias. A doco based on plant based diet is seen as fake. If the docs was "Meat is the best for you" that will also be fake. Why is that? Its what we do these days, every claim is bagged online. I saw a few sites, beef sites bagging the doco. Expected. But these are true are they not? Its identical to the moon landing, always a conspiracy. I saw a few sites that pretty much saw red meat as the saviour, and those stupid vegan idiots. Prior to this doco I was reading up on similar stuff. Not vegan, vegetarian or meat, related health stuff. Then I saw the doco, so to me, it seemed to male a lot of sense based on the general health site stuff I had read. But no, it's fake.

Tastes good to you. What makes you think your taste should arbitrate what others experience?

Tastes great to me and is a good source of iron and protein etc. You can try and use your powers of persuasion all you want...but I dont do what you decide.

It wasn't me that started a thread suggesting we should all start eating like cows rather than eating cows. I am in fact rebutting the suggested arbitration of what I eat.

You said it tastes good and surely that is all that is required? That is a pretty subjective assessment. There are millions of Indians in the world who would not agree that it tastes good at all. You are just imposing your own arbitration on the one you are rejecting.

Dont make things up. This is what grates me about the internet, its less about the issue and more about winning the argument. I didn't "start this thread suggesting we should all eat like cows" I mentioned a doco that says a plant based diet is best, and what are anyones comments.

If you prefer to eat meat that's your comment. If that's only  due to taste that's your choice

To be accurate, there are millions of Indians who have no idea whether it tastes good. Taste (or otherwise) is not why they don't eat it and since they will likely never have eaten it, they'll have no idea.

I, on the other hand, have eaten vegetables so I know they taste vile! 😇
