Geektastic:

The question you posed in no way suggested that the answer was necessarily in the vein of what was posted in response. All manner of things affect people every day. There's no particular reason to assume the question means what you have expanded it to mean.

On the basis of your expanded version, I would say almost nothing engenders that strong a reaction

You are quibbling. The question is what is something that really affects you? In this context really could be substituted with strongly. It suggests, quite clearly, something that elicits a powerful emotional reaction. If train schedules do that for you, welcome aboard.

Reading about the rape and murder of Lena Zhang.

That was pure evil.  It makes me want to weep.

Same. Downs Syndrome, probably the happiest and carefree people we can meet. I helped one across a busy road/pedestrian crossing a few years back. She was beside herself with happiness. If I found myself at a loss for time, I will volunteer. You can give so little (for some one fully able) yet give so much joy to the afflicted.

I guess thats pay it forward?

100%. I have thought about this event a lot. It's such a horrible thing. I am so so sorry for what she went through. I can't comprehend what makes someone do something like this to anyone, but especially the defenceless and less fortunate.

The 3 kids killed by their mother in Otago. I can't imagine the pain for everyone involved including the mother. The whole situation is horrific.

I can't imagine the circumstances that would lead to such a thing, which is why I haven't commented on it. Of course it is an inconceivable tragedy, but there are too many unknowns here.

I agree, the torment that would drive someone to do this seems inconceivable, as would the pain be for those left behind.

The kids and dad who have been found after 17 days missing. I was dreading the worst. I don't know what happened, but man I am SO glad to see them safe.

What I always find inconceivable about these kinds of things is the cosmic hypocrisy of the offending individuals, who are usually clerics of some description. How do they go through life, often for many years, preying on children and praying in church? Do they ever question their motives? Did they start out as cynical predators looking for easy targets or did something happen along the way? How can they smile and nod and drink tea with the parents while abusing the children? Do they think they are clever by getting away with it? Are they simply evil and they have no problem at all living the worst kind of lie for years on end? I find it truly unfathomable and deeply disturbing that there are certainly more people like that passing in society and getting away with it.

Me too. I guess they convince themselves the victims are willing participants and that makes it OK. The mind is a complex and tricky things. It will try and justify actions.

It's heartbreaking in so many ways. Listening to the victim statements on the news yesterday, brought tears to my eyes. So many innocent lives are affected in so many different ways. I understand there are sentencing guidelines, but the convicted yesterday got 6 years and I'd bet every victim will suffer for much longer than that.

Probably mentioned previously but really annoying and dangerous. Idiots parking vehicles across the footpath. This is becoming more prevalent in Te Awakairangi with the infill building going on. Having to go onto the road in a chair is extremely dangerous. Just now I was heading out and I had to turn back due to the footpath blocked in several locations and the road to narrow and busy to risk going on the road.
