bye pool 2 - YouTube

The pool is stuffed. At that level, the silt and water get in behind the vinyl and cause it to lift etc.

Hope this isn't too dumb a question, but... water damage to a pool?

Its a vinyl lined pool, so you have a hole in the ground, light concrete base, line it with thing metal sheeting around the sides, which gives it the shape, then place vinyl over the top. Unfortunately you pretty much always have gaps etc around the edging, and if water gets in between everything, it can cause the vinyl to lift off the bottom causing it to bunch/become mis-shaped, so no longer a smooth finish and eventually cause the light concrete to break etc risking holes/damage to the liner.

Has this happened ? Well, to be honest, no idea as yet, as the pool is now a nice brown color so I can't see the bottom. But going by how badly it flooded, I'm pretty sure its happened. At this stage we're waiting an insurance assessor to visit and they'll make the call in what to do.

If I drain the pool, and leave it exposed too long, the vinyl starts to shrink, and you then cant get it back to the original shape/size when refilled.

If insurance is happy to sort it, great, if not we'll probably just fill it in...... I'll turn it into a nice BBQ area with a man shed and spa :D

alexx: Sun is out in the central City too and there is a new lake in Auckland Domain.

Not exactly new. The area was a swampy lake long ago before it was sports fields.

Is it in a flood zone?. I am wondering if this is considered a 1 in 100 flood event or higher.

We had four of those last year, this is the first one for this year.

When I had the engineering calcs done for the flood channel for the house I asked the engineers to use 1 in 1000 flood event data, if such figures exist, and ignore the nonsensical 1 in 100 ones which are essentially useless for evaluating actual flood risk. Or at least, you can take the 1 in 100 figures and assume that's what you'll see every year.

To be fair it was a stupid question. How well prepared is any city in the world to get three months' rain in a day?

100%. I feel its disingenuous with his comment. I read, correct me if I'm wrong it was near on 2 metres of rain?  Rain is no issue, but that much, that quick is. With Climate Change a major part of this (yes I know its essentially a La Nina issue, but...) storm drainage needs to be on the agenda for the top half of the N.I.

In a country that has just had it's warmest, wettest winter on record and warmest year on record, both in 2022, it's not unreasonable to ask how well prepared we are for extreme weather events.

This is old news. To sit on the fence, lets spend gazillions and nothing happens. Lets ignore it, and this happens. Dont go down the blame game route. Then blame when "it" happens. If the country got in behind the long term issues, we can push forward. But even them you cannot foresee this event. At a minimum, national and local Govt can talk re next season

Auckland needs a new Mayor. That press conference performance was poor to say the least. End of story.

No idea, but probably, if not, at least. As has been displayed globally, the frequency will grow. Climate Change though isnt a huge priority here and elsewhere. Money and conspiracy rule, even though real time events are common now

As someone who promoted himself as 'Mr Fixit', like no one else can.
It should be something he would be energetic on getting teeth into.

Some key areas of worst flooding have had repeated issues pointing to problems.
Especially if just one thing fails.
Then we had the long dry, so probably dropped off radar.

I would not be surprised if somewhere there is a report from some time back.
The statement that houses should not have been built in certain places indicates something is known.
If its' based-on facts, not just a 'fire from the hip'

Auckland has to have higher density housing and infill housing.
Storm water management upgrades 'should go 'hand in hand' with these.
Major cities build some massive works as they grow to accommodate.

Paving farmland is not an answer, Pukekohe also had some problems managing runoff.

I'm actually wondering if there were no crises (natural disasters, etc) that he had to deal with when he was mayor of the Far North. That might go some way to explaining why he's handled this so poorly.

Does anyone know/remember? His Wikipedia entry doesn't list any - but also says that he didn't have a particularly good reputation up there, either.

More rain today and tomorrow. Flooding will probably ease well, but ongoing saturation is another issue.

Hydrological ground pressure seems to have lifted and tilted the whole slab foundation.
A new one for me never knew it was a thing, apart from earthquakes.

So, what's Mr Brown doing today? He doesn't get out "with the buckets", so what is he doing instead? Anything of value?

interesting footage. i wonder what that black plastic is in the ground and why its there. it almost looks like moisture barrier instead of geotek fabric.

it really sucks for the people, hard to find housing as it is.

Can’t help thinking that all this multi rise infill housing Councils are encouraging to be built behind existing homes is adding to the problem of over stretching the underground infrastructure and it’s not just nature’s fault.
