I am really alarmed at the unprovoked threats and abuse that I have experienced from total strangers in recent months. I am becoming increasingly convinced that it is only a matter of time before myself, or one of my friends, is violently assaulted.

People are genuinely frightened now, and if the government is not decisive in their response to crime and anti-social behaviour then they are going to pay for it on October the 14th.

Is it a cure? It’s catch and release with people that age. The police are not the problem, it’s what happens afterwards.

It's far more what happens before

With well over a year of this ongoing crime spree daily, it's clear it's not a priority for those who set priorities for the police.

I do however notice, plenty of police patrolling the roads catching those going 4KM over the limit.

Priorities.

100% agree.

When I was still in NZ, it was heartbreaking watching Auckland becoming more and more unsafe. Walking to and from work always looking behind ones shoulder. Being able to point out - this supermarket got hit the other week, this bottle store got hit, having students from the same school (different campus) being held up at gunpoint, nearby petrol station shooting etc. Having a friend assaulted in Wellington, requiring dental work (not too sure if the police have actually laid charges yet or arrested him).

I've subsequently moved out of country and whilst its not unicorns frocking in the meadows... its safer here and we haven't experienced anything close to what has been going down in NZ lately.

Yes. I can't speak for Sydney nor the real-life GTA server called Alice Springs, but Brisbane has been kind to us.

Brisbane is awesome. Where abouts are you? We down in Redland Bay. Would not trade it for anywhere in NZ.

If nothing happens afterwards of consequence then they are free to keep on committing crimes. Also if there is no fear of what will happen when caught, then there is no fear for others to go and have the time of their lives at others expense.

Here is an example of two boys who ransacked a neighbourhood for over a year, as where ever they were put they escaped from. The last act reported in this one was cutting of fish’s heads and throwing them on the floor, plus smashing up the persons property.

https://www.chrislynchmedia.com/news-items/motherofyoungboysshockedatactions#:~:text=The%20culprits%20aged%20six%20and,fish%20from%20the%20outside%20pond.

”Police captured the boys on the same street hours later after they threatened a woman with a carving knife they had stolen from the kitchen.”

”While the boys are known to the police, their age prevented police from taking any action”

Whilst not a smash and grab, I was at Sylvia park today and witnessed two girls load up as much as they could carry in kids clothes from H&M and walked right out the store. The staff tried to block their paths but couldn’t do much more than that, security followed them but again that’s all they could do.

I felt tempted to intervene but I would probably land myself in trouble for the hassle. What can you do, crime like this is so high with little to no consequences and the people are powerless to stop it.

Soon we will see double door systems with manual release locks controlled by the staff, as in many other parts of the world.

My hairdresser's son works in Smith and Caughys department store in Auckland city and he tells me his son regularly watches people grab a load of expensive clothes and just swan out the door.  They even nod and smile at the staff, or give a cheeky wave.  They know there is ZERO the staff can do about it.

Staff should not intervene in these situations, they are not the police, they have no powers and they are not paid enough to put themselves in harms way.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Prison is not the answer if it were crime like this would have been solved centuries ago.

My 18 year old son was in Maccas with two of his team mates after a game of football on Saturday, over in a South Eastern part of Auckland - all dressed in the same tracksuits/sports gear and obviously not from the location they were in - a man came in and told him (not in this way) to please move out of the way.
My son's reply was "Sorry mate", then he moved out of his way - at which point the person threatened to smash his face in and called him a number of anti-Caucasian slurs and then grabbed a random bag of food off the counter and walked out, shouldering past my son's team mate on the way out (clearly looking for a reaction so he could "justify" beating the crap out of these kids).

It wasn't like this pre-Covid. Or at least not in the same brazen way.

Needless to say, the food the guy took wasn't his and nobody questioned him, for fear of escalation to violence.
