I recently went to London, where they have Amazon Fresh and Aldi using camera tracking technologies.  There are 5-10 cameras per aisle tracking items you removed from the shelf, and you just have to scan your credit card or Amazon app QR code to exit the store.   Staff said if I take an item and put it back on another shelf, I will still be charged.  My teenage son and I were stopped for checking at the exit because we walked past the alcohol aisle.

The store looks to have only 2 staff members.  Sooner or later, these technologies will land on this side of the world, and there will be more cameras tracking our every move.

What audio are they talking about? I hope it is only for bodycams, because recording anything when one of their staff are not present will get them in serious trouble.

Imagr in Auckland was working on unattended Supermarket/Minimart checkout, but never heard of progress to a working store?

What I object to ...

If someone causes problems for their staff and then goes and checks out, I would expect them to log the recordings of the problems against their profile so they know when it gets bad enough to trespass them. Are you saying that if they have a recording of abuse or someone stuffing some steak down their pants that they should not record that against the customer to help when it comes time to recover costs from them?

I don't mind if a black mark is put on such a rude customer with a human in the loop. What I object to the is the automatic & indiscriminate collecting, scraping, combining, harvesting of info for their financial gain.

I've just deleted my account with my real name and details.

Unfortunately you can't live without it - or can you? Anyway, I've created a new account with made up details. Do what I can. Not perfect but hey.

Looks like my onecard info was copied over the only thing that's correct / factual on the account is the email to login

Good move. Sad we have to do this these days to protect ourselves.

Over time the data companies will have will be less and less useful. So it's a losing situation for all.

I was in a Countdown a few weeks ago - and the self-checkout complained that it required attention as I was trying to pay. Turns out there was image recognition which had identified the half-eaten banana (from the "free fruit for children") in the trolley as an item I had forgotten to scan. The self-checkout replayed the video of me scanning items and then showed a separate feed of the trolley with a bounding box around the suspicious item.

I wonder if this is a trial store - as I haven't seen it elsewhere (but to be fair I don't go to a supermarket more than about twice a year).

There is a large sign at the door of the Whakatane Countdown stating that they're trialling something with cameras here (I don't recall the exact wording, and I haven't been back because I found it creepy!).

I don't disagree, but isn't that exactly what google / facebook etc already do?

I'm reminded of this -

CALLER: Is this Gordon's Pizza?

GOOGLE: No sir, it's Google Pizza.

CALLER: I must have dialed a wrong number. Sorry.

GOOGLE: No sir, Google bought Gordon’s Pizza last month.

CALLER: OK. I would like to order a pizza.

GOOGLE: Do you want your usual, sir?

CALLER: My usual? You know me?

GOOGLE: According to our caller ID data sheet, the last 12 times you called you ordered an extra-large pizza with three cheeses, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms and meatballs on a thick crust.

CALLER: OK! That’s what I want …

GOOGLE: May I suggest that this time you order a pizza with ricotta, arugula, sun-dried tomatoes and olives on a whole wheat gluten-free thin crust?

CALLER: What? I detest vegetable!.

GOOGLE: Your cholesterol is not good, sir.

CALLER: How the hell do you know?!

GOOGLE: Well, we cross-referenced your home phone number with your medical records. We have the result of your blood tests for the last 7 years.

CALLER: Okay, but I do not want your rotten vegetable pizza! I already take medication for my cholesterol.

GOOGLE: Excuse me sir, but you have not taken your medication regularly. According to our database, you only purchased a box of 30 cholesterol tablets once, at Drug RX Network, 4 months ago.

CALLER: I bought more from another drugstore.

GOOGLE: That doesn’t show on your credit card statement.

CALLER: I paid in cash.

GOOGLE: But you did not withdraw enough cash according to your bank statement.

CALLER: I have other sources of cash.

GOOGLE: That doesn’t show on your last tax return unless you bought them using an undeclared income source, which is against the law.

CALLER: WHAT THE HELL?!!!

GOOGLE: I'm sorry, sir, we use such information only with the sole intention of helping you.

CALLER: Enough already! I'm sick to death of Google, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and all the others. I'm going to an island without internet, cable TV, where there is no cell phone service and no one to watch me or spy on me

GOOGLE: I understand sir, but you need to renew your passport first. It expired 6 weeks ago…

Don't just avoid the place, send an email to the store telling them why.

Yes, & also the reason why I minimise my digital exhaust on those platforms as much as possible.

Posting on other social networks is also a good way to apply pressure.

If you don't like something a retailer is doing then making it very clear to them, and others, will sometimes get change.

Do we get 6c off every day and do we stack them or do we just use them? I see that there are also points with the purchase is that on top of the discount.

https://www.bp.com/en_nz/new-zealand/home/products-and-services/promotions-and-rewards/everydayrewards.html#accordion_Where-else-can-I-earn-points

Looks like no accumulation any more.  6 cents or discount of day applied automatically. One point also earned for each litre of petrol purchased, so would be on top of discount as not money spent related.

One point earned for each $1 spent on most things in store.

My reading of it is as long as account not inactive for 18 months, points don’t expire.

Can also use 2000 points for $15 discount at BP, unsure if that $15 or litres purchased with it would count for additional points.

Generally though I find BP has higher prices then others like currently BP nearest me before discount is $2.80.9, where a different station is 2.63.6, so even with 6 or 10 cents off the BP is still more expensive. I’ll probably do the first full with 20 cents off a litre, and then I won’t be back at BP for a long time.
