~75mins and 15kms of her telling me all the details of her and her friend's sex lives. All the details, nothing was left out and I mean nothing. It made me feel very old. When did young people become so open with that topic?

So was it one way conversation then? ๐Ÿคจ

Sadly it was very much a one way conversation.

My Gmail address is xxxxxx@gmail.com, all characters and no numbers.

Likewise mine is the same as I use everywhere. Back when it needed invites to get it and you got a set number every so often.

My original "welcome" email is still in my GMail:

Date: Tue, 7 Sep 2004 03:12:43 -0700 (PDT)
To: James .....
From: Gmail Team <gmail-noreply@google.com>
Subject: Gmail is different. Here's what you need to know.

First off, welcome. And thanks for agreeing to help us test Gmail.

That's almost 20 years old now.

CokemonZ: A few weeks ago I went into the supermarket after a day replacing siding on a scout hall.

Hadn't shaved for a week, hair was a bit wild, and a bit grubby.

Automatically gave me the senior discount.

Could have been worse, they could have directed you to a homeless shelter :-).

Old enough to have had a jetstart "fast" internet connection?

I'm old enough to have used a 14.4 kbps connection in earnest... effective speed around 1 KBps. Sure there are some older...

300 baud. Also 1200/75. I had one of the first modems capable of this. Most others at the time were acoustic.

Oh gawd, this is going to get into a dicksize war fast... (cough)1200/75(cough).  And that's before you get into things like ASR33's.

Edited to add: Anyone here want to remember how they had to bang rocks together to get ones and zeroes?  Or were so poor they could only afford the zeroes? :-).

Forgot about those days when you were specially invited to participate. I remember giving one of my free invites to a dear man in Egypt trying to do business and he still uses it. Internet was hardly a thing in developing countries then and he felt very honoured.

I was early enough in the game when Xtra started around 1996 that I was able to get my three initials as my email address - xxx@xtra.co.nz. Thought nothing of it at the time. This is one reason why I am reluctant to move from Xtra.

On the plus side you can get your own domain so you have firstname@lastname.nz instead nowadays...

Sadly, not if your lastname is the same as a giant worldwide insurance broker ๐Ÿ˜ž

It's not an ego competition. At least not for me. I find it interesting to hear about the early gadget experiences of others and enjoy sharing in the same spirit. I still fondly remember my first modem, which I actually wrote some software for. That was in 1984, if I recall correctly. At that time my personal computer was a CP/M Kaypro. Isn't this thread supposed to be about things that make one feel old? That one certainly does!

Oh, and at school final year we had punch cards. Had to punch each line of code onto a card (from memory it was FORTRAN) wrap a rubber band around it and they all went up to the University of Auckland computer center who ran them for us and the cards and resulting printout were sent back once they got spare time to run them.

I tripped and fell in the carpark at the golf club last weekend. I had "youg people" come to help me get up.
