phlegmboy: I was watching John Campbel on TV3 and there was footage from a guy who took an undercover camera into this thing.

Interestingly, in the not too distant past, the Catholic Church expected followers to pass some of their income to the church as well.

All said and done, if the people are happy to give up their money and is makes them happy and the church don't interfere with others - who cares?? If this changes, then a different story.

Things are only as complicated as you want them to be!!

While I might agree to a lot that been said here, I must remember you guys that defamation laws in New Zealand are tough. It's not if you are right, but if the other part feel "offended".

So I have modified some posts. Please keep the discussion on what the TV program was.

I find destiny church to be about equally as likely to be right as pretty much any other religion. If people want to follow that guy then I don't really have a problem with it.

It's certianly no more wierd to me than mainstream religion where you have people beleiving that in order to get to heaven you need to do some wierd things such as eat biscuits that magically turn into human flesh, chop parts of your genitals off, or really really hate homosexuals.

The only difference between a cult and religion? Number of followers.

Yep, his "Church" is just as valid as any other.

While I don't like seeing people getting shafted for money - it's their choice and if they lack the critical thinking to spot nonsense when they see it... their loss not mine.

I might not agree with what he or his followers believe - but will defend their right to believe it... to a point of course! Just as long as Mr Tamaki keeps out of politics and doesn't influence society outside of his Church.

I think the media targets him too much, and I have a problem with this... for two reasons:

1) This sort of stuff rates highly, and the media knows this. They'll stir up anything if it means people tuning in or buying a paper. I watch current affairs show with a very skeptical eye these days, it's not hard to find a way to manipulate the way the viewer/reader will interpret things.

2) It gives Mr Tamaki FREE AIR TIME to voice his opinion! Since I personally find many of his views quite repulsive, one of the worst things we can do is give this guy a soap box.

I think the thing about these sort of discusions that I (at least) enjoy is the variety of responses from the serious to the humourous to the sarcastic to the borderline - 'can you say that'. The other thing that I enjoy is the fact that some of those repsonses have made me question both my initial 'emotional' response to this event and the underlying reasons for that response (hopefully thats not to deep).

I think some of those underlying emotions 'are' probably to deep for discussion here but one thought that did come to mind that would not cross that boundry of never discussing religion or politics over dinner is that the last time I felt similar anger was that bloke who was selling 'maori passports' or what ever it was to desperate people so that they believed they could stay in NZ. People who were trusting, simple (not in an intelectual way), desperate and they were manipulated by someone for the sole reason of benefiting himself and then trying passing it off as something good.

I am no biblical scholar (as I am sure Brian Tamaki is), and I am in more need of grace than many, but I believe that what has happened at Destiny Church is incredibly sad for those involved and I think even more so for the 'Destiny' leadership who while they deceive others deceive themselves even more.

I am wary of what Bishop Brian is setting up here, and I've definitely discussed that among friends, but I'm still waiting to see what happens when all these plans of Bishop Brian's go through. Maybe we'll have another Waco, or maybe we'll have another Noah's Ark. As much as the actions of the last week or so concern me as a Christian I'm going to try and exercise restraint by not jumping to any conculsions.
