I'm a direct descendant of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D._G._Monrad who was a pioneer of the making of a constitutional Denmark as well as an early settler in NZ. He donated a lot of  RembrandtRubensDürer and van Dyck paintings/etchings to the museum of NZ. There is also a school in Palmerston North called Monrad Intermediate named after him.

Can't say anyone in my family is famous. I was vocalist/guitarist in (arguably) NZ's biggest metal band right now but that's about it. And I quit them before they got gigs with Metallica and Iron Maiden! D'oh!
