I had to read that three times before I realised that you meant "feed possum and rabbit pie to the poor" as opposed to "feed pie to the poor possum and the rabbit". My annoyance of the day is therefore English!

The cost of the Interislander.

I thought about taking SWMBO away for a long weekend down south in February. Since I do not know 100% if she or I will both be available at the time due to unpredictable work, I wanted the maximum flexibility for the crossing in case we could not go.

I changed my idea of what to do that weekend on finding out that the ticket was $820....!!

Although many more users cross the Channel, as a comparison I did that a couple of years ago for $160 return with a car and 4 people!

I could fly to the US for less than the cost of that crossing.

Yup. They should build a bridge; there's one of similar length in Canada serving about 1/7th of the population, charging I think $50 per car. It must be possible to make the figures work...

A bridge over a very rough strait and a tectonic subduction zone would not be a great idea.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Only a question of money. Throw enough at it and a bridge could be built that would survive almost anything.

The Strait is deep in places and averages 120 odd meters and up to 400 meters, the Terawhiti / Karori rip is very strong and changes its flow direction, wind can exceed 160km/h on many days then there is the seismic problems with frequent quakes the largest recorded being 8.5, the two islands are actually moving in opposite direction.

How now oh toxic cow
crap again and take a bow
where will all the people fit
when you’ve filled our land with

sit awhile, contemplate
chew your cud and ruminate
chomp some grass and defecate
again and fill our land with

money flows like milk and honey
clean and green we are no more
just dollar rich and eco poor.
