The Boroughs on Netflix.

Set in a retirement community in the US desert, a reluctant new resident makes friends with his neighbours and then they investigating some strange goings-on.

Created by the team that made Stranger Things, this has all the hallmarks of their productions, with some good Scifi elements, along with decent character development and some sideline stories going on.

We're three episodes in and really enjoying it so far.

I really enjoyed that show. Pity that Netflix has cancelled it after the first season.

Alice and Steve (Disney+) - 3/10

My partner and I flicked this on last week as a bit of a random shot, and the first episode looked promising. Jermaine Clement plays Steve, an early 50s man who has divorced from his wife and is living a pretty sad and lonely life with only his ex-wife's dog and his best friend Alice for company. Ruth Walker plays Alice, who has re-married Daniel, 10-years younger than her). They have two kids: Izzy, 26, from her first marriage, and Dom, 17. The first episode opens promisingly with Steve and Alice at a funeral for a friend, and they commiserate by going out and getting drunk (and high). They used to date a long-time ago but they are clearly still very close and best friends. Steve is a bit sad and detached, while Alice is very loud and brash. When they go home they find Alice's daughter has broken up with her boyfriend and has moved back home. Steve crashes on the couch when Alice goes to bed, and then - somehow - Izzy comes on to Steve and they end up together. Alice finds out and just cannot cope with it, and goes ballistic.

So this is a really ick concept for me - an older man with his best friend's much younger daughter, whom he has known all her life. But the comedic prospects were strong. So it's unbelievably disappointing how bad this show turned out to be. Jermaine Clement is born to play awkward, slightly depressed/repressed characters, but he just seems completely devoid of any kind of depth here. He has no chemistry with anyone here, even with Alice as his best friend. It just doesn't really land. Ruth Walker as Alice is one-note. While that note offers hope at the start, it just becomes implausible that a person could be that selfish and self-obsessed with no-one noticing until now. Steve has no chemistry with Izzy, so it's really hard to see why they are together, why they fight so hard to convince Alice that they really are in love (after all of 10 minutes together, and seemingly bonding over a shared knowledge of a Willie Nelson song), and why we should care that they should prevail. Alice's rage is understandable at first, but then it just becomes nonsensical. Then there are all the side characters and side stories. Daniel has a problem with his wife's rage, and - somehow - it makes him question his marriage to her. He ends up talking to a very forthright woman he works with...but this story really doesn't go anywhere over the course of the 6 episodes, and has very little impact on the main story. Alice and Daniel's son Dom is embarking on a romance with Rome, but again the story is largely pointless and has very little relationship to the main story. None of the characters develop at all.

The series ends on a freeze-frame, a la Thelma and Louise. I won't say anymore for fear of spoilers. But it's not earned in any way. It feels like the writers came up with an interesting concept (older man dates his best friend's younger daughter) and an ending (the freeze-frame) and then asked AI to fill in the gaps, because it doesn't make any narrative sense, it's disconnected and pointless, and there's no development of any kind. Both my partner and I spent most of the time groaning in frustration, pausing the show several times to rage against the stupidity of it all, and then feeling very aggravated and annoyed at the waste of time it all was.

So I've raged here to save you all the disappointment - don't be sucked in by the first episode, it's not worth it.

Binged my way through the first season of The Agency, its a slow burn and the first half dozen episodes take a while to get into, but most of this is paid off in the final two or three which are very watchable,

Its a Spy show, about covert operations being run out of the US Embassy in London,

Its got a great cast with Michael Fassbender, Jeffrey Wright and Richard Gere, there's even basically a cameos from Dominic West beaming in as the CIA director,

Fassbender is the focus of the Show and it follows his reintegration back into "regular" society, after his 6 year deep undercover operation is cancelled, we never find out why...

Its a remake of a popular and acclaimed French series The Bureau, which ran for 5 seasons,

The second season dropped in June this year, but there has been no comment on whether there will be a third season.

Currently watching UK show Protection. Two episodes into it and IMO truly excellent - in the tradition of some of the great UK cop shows.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

The Capture is a British conspiracy thriller television series created and written by Ben Chanan and produced by Heyday Television as part of Universal International Studios for the BBC. The series is centred on Rachel Carey, a fast-track Metropolitan Police detective drawn into a vast conspiracy involving real-time deepfake technology, mass surveillance and manipulated video evidence. The narrative focuses on the dangers of a "post-truth" society, examining themes of political interference, state-sanctioned disinformation, and the ethical implications of covert intelligence operations

Thought series 1 was OK, and watched it again recently so we'd have a better grasp of series 2. Well, series 2 was an easy 9/10 in our book. Gripping as heck, and super scary. It's about the Brit security services using Ai to fake evidence, but in series 2 they take it up a gear or two. Of course, the irony is that we can do a lot of what they were doing, we can absolutely do now on our home computers, but not in real time which is what the bad guys were doing. I won't give away any more than that, but I'll say again it is worth watching. We have series 3 ready to watch, but needed a break from all the edge of the seat excitement.

Finished series 2 of Lioness tonight, which you'll know is a Taylor Sheridan show. He's in it as well, and has a decent part. It's unmistakably American, but super exciting most of the time.

I've started watching Constellation on Apple TV.
It's a bit much for me at times as I am both claustrophobic and a bit sensitive to high-stress situations, which is what this is really built on.
With that said, it's a really good show so far (couple of episodes in).
I'm also enjoying the new seasons of Sugar and Silo - both on Apple TV.

I assume the latest, "Arrowverse" version?

I'd like to revisit the 1980's Flash to see just how awful it is. I recall it being pretty awful.

being a bit harsh on Ride or die on Prime Video, i really enjoyed it and would give it a 8/10. It sits at 7.6 on IDMB and 97% on Rotten Tomatoes

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I'd give it an 8/10, the clear digs at the power of engaging in dialog rather than simply going to war will probably be lost on the average American.

The Netflix show "YOU". It's a good watch however it outstays its welcome. S1, S2 and S3 - Good watches, past that however not incredible. I'd recommend it a watch if anyone hasn't yet but just keep your expectations low for the final season!
