Cabinetmaker arrived today to measure up prior to the insurance reinstatement.

"Yeah, nah - there's no way they can expect me to be able to take any of that out without damaging it, mate".
"You'll be looking at a whole new kitchen there, mate".

Me - so does that mean benchtops, sink insert and everything?

CM - "Yeah - the whole lot's going. You just saved yourself about $30k".

Oh, believe me - just the fact that we are getting movement is giving us joy at the moment.

But I also know the perils of being excited at the prospect of getting a finished job and it not living up to expectations...this insurance claim has wounded us one too many times to be blindly naïve to that.

Being home again and having good coffee. Central Europeans do many things well, unfortunately coffee isn’t one of them.

I know there are great specialty coffee places there but when it’s work trip you often don’t have time to find them.

We do that out of pure concern. After all, you're supposed to be working, not just coming here to drink coffee. πŸ˜—

The secret is that almost everyone here has their own espresso/coffee machine at home. The usual coffee chains are for tourists and more rare baristas for connoisseurs.

Nah. Most central Europeans don’t really know what really good specialty espresso is. It’s one thing Australia and New Zealand objectively do better than Europe.

It was one of the challenges with moving to the Middle East as the espresso culture here
mostly comes from Europe. A surprising number of the really good cafes here are run by Australians and New Zealanders.

For you, it's probably like the numerous New Zealand restaurants in Europe for me. As I said, coffee and espresso are drunk here at home, in one of the roasting houses or in a good restaurant after a meal. Vienna and Italy traditionally have a completely different coffee culture. I can't complain, I'm well supplied with everything (including fresh roasted beans), at home and with barista in the city. πŸ™‚

No, this is the feedback we would consistently get from the Germans who would come on delegation. Given how rare it is for a Bavarian to admit that anything outside of Bavaria is better than at home I'm inclined to agree with them.

As I said, I can't complain (but I have also only travelled to 121 of the 193 countries currently on this planet in my life up to now). In their view, the Kingdom of Bavaria does not belong to Germany either. πŸ˜„

Misleading and unenforceable’: Parking ticket quashed after Disputes Tribunal challenge

A man hit with a $65 ticket after spending too long in a supermarket carpark has managed to get his fine waived after proving he wasn’t behind the wheel so can’t be held responsible.

The owner of the car claimed that the signposted ‘contract’ with the parking company to park for no longer than 90 minutes was between the company and the driver of the vehicle.

In this case the driver was a person he had loaned the car to. Luckily for that person, the car’s owner successfully fought to keep their name secret, despite the parking company demanding he reveal their identity so the fine could be passed on.

I have one piece of equipment that has no way of changing the time without doing a factory reset. It is now showing the correct time again.
