Not true. Microsoft impose an artificial 1GB memory limit on the sale of XP-Based Netbooks by way of licence. There is nothing stopping a user upgrade.

Should clarify, XP will accept up to 4gb (these netbooks have one slot and accept up to a 2 gb DIMM) but the accessable amount of is the question, how much more memory will it give you and there is a bit of a debate as to the benefits that increase will give you.

For windows 7 the speed increase will be noticable .... but XP not so much if at all

It would be good if someone could provide a side by side comparison of the features. At the moment I can see the following

GOOD
* 6 Cell Battery - vs 3 Cell
* WLAN B/G/N - vs B/G
* Screen 1024x600 vs 1024x576

BAD
* No Bluetooth - One of the reasons I wanted the HP
* Processor is a N270 rather than an N280

UNKNOWN
* Was the HP Webcam a 1MP or a 0.3

OVERALL
Looks like a good deal for the money.

I've seen conflicting reports.

Bluetooth is more important to me than the 802.11n it has over the HP machine. Being able to use a phone as modem and access the internet is the primary reason for this, I didn't really want to carry a data cable...

What sort of phone do you have? Bluetooth sucks for tethering because it's slow. There are plenty of apps for various handsets such as Joikuspot for Symbian that turn your phone into a WiFi hotspot and do a far better job.

Yep, Ive got 2GB in my HP netbook I got from HN on boxing day. To clarify even though the XP sticker says it ULPC its XP home which can use more than 1gb. So its not actually ULPC evben though its licensed that way to the OEM.

Out of curiousity, did the Asus come with a restore disk/media. I had to build my own restore media (onto USB stick) from the I386 directory as the HP didnt come with anything to restore from.

A fresh install from USB got rid of all the junk HP put on.

BTW SODIMM 2gb DDR2 800mhz is $79 at DSE. Cheapest I could find.

It would appear the answer is no.. hitting Fn F2 just toggles the wireless on/off, the manual suggest this would also toggle bluetooth on/off if it was installed. I guess thats what the N/A on the specs list on the box refers to.

This is a bit of a bugger, that would have been useful. Guess we'll just have to get one of those tiny bluetooth USB dongles. ($15 or so on trademe, i can live with that)

or ~NZ$3.50 including postage from dealextreme.com

I have a Nokia 6220c - A Symbian phone, but, no Wi-Fi sadly. On 2 Degrees, so fastest speed currently is edge therefore bluetooth teathering is not slower. That's a pretty cool feature though.

Also - not having a ms slot is also annonying given all of my cameras are Sony...

According to HP website the hp mini was also 1024 x 600. You may have viewed the specs for a different model of hp mini.
No mention of resolution of webcam on HP site.

Some will be inconvenienced by the different card reader and lack of bluetooth, and the N280 would've been nicer. The bluetooth and card reader problems can both be addressed with usb adapters so not really a show stopper.

Overall is still a bloody good bit of kit for the price. If you disagree and aren't happy with the asus drop me a PM and i'll buy yours for $300. :D

The difference between the Atom 270 and 280 seems to be about 5% at most.

Does the battery stick out as it is larger? Is quite a good replacement. However didn't they say it was being custom built. Why couldn't they just have said it was the 1001 and that would have avoided all this speculation. I am sure most people will be happy.

HN Manukau just advised shipment still up to two weeks away??! Apparently it's because they had the biggest order they have to wait longer. Have to say I'm not impressed by this update. Really hope the guy was wrong.
