On first viewing LOTR can be confusing. There are a lot of characters, their names aren't that easy to remember and their relationships sometime difficult to fathom. Reading the book first doesn't really help either.

Funnily enough I've never seen The Hobbit.

Glad to hear someone else say that. Disliking or at least not being a massive fan of LOTR or Lorde, or whatever, seems to be something you'll likely end up getting into a heated argument about with almost any NZ'r it seems!

Ha ha.

Not a Lorde Fan but definitely a Lord of the Rings fan.

I don't know why Kiwis feel the need to get so riled up when you say something so grossly un-Kiwi as to express a dislike for Lorde or NZ Lamb or Dave Dobbyn.

People have opinions. That's why we opine.

Nobody - Apple TV

Excellent 10/10

Really enjoyed this one. Very well produced and compelling story that is a bit violent but was just well worth the watch.

+1. Or as I like to refer to it, John Wick Jnr.

Highly recommended, best film in its genre for a long time.

Monster Hunter (Apple TV/iTunes) - Not the first time I have seen it, but aside from some poor acting and the ridiculous plot (not to mention the hairdo on Ron Perlman), it's an OK "take out your brain" movie.

6/10

Saturday Night Fever 8/10

An oldie but goodie. Rubbish story but great music and in some scenes great atmosphere. John Travolta stands out head and shoulders over the rest.

I agree with the first part but not the second! As a big fan of the books I found the movies to be an excellent adaptation overall - especially the extendo-versions - and very easy to follow having read the source material a few times!

In the brilliance of the LOTR trilogy, the Hobbit therefore becomes even more unforgivable. I am surprised given his reverence for the source with the first movies that PJ didn't have more sway with the studio (or maybe they were his decisions?) when it came to making the hobbit.

There is one very good 3 hour movie in the 9 odd hours of the Hobbit and given how light the original book was, that is all they need. The pointless love stories, "fan-service" callbacks to the LOTR movies and a vomit of unnecessary CGI nonsense when none was needed ruin the thing entirely.

I will always go back and watch LOTR - in fact I am doing so now in glorious 4k HD (that 35mm transfer is *amazing* in 4k) but I will die happy if I never have to sit through the Hobbit again.

The General's Daughter 7.5/10 DVD

An excellent murder mystery starring John Travolta as a military investigator trying to solve the murder of a generals daughter found staked out at the training ground. Lots of good supporting roles.

Worth a watch.

I thought it was OK, watched it in the weekend, was a bit weird in places. Thought the explanation for the name the auditor was funny.

6.5/10 for me.

Watched this over the weekend, agree with your rating. Some weird plot holes/twists, but overall pretty good.

I feel like recently there hasn't been any decent action thrillers/dramas with decent plots. Anyone recommend anything?

The Suicide Squad (2021) - 8/10 Focal Point Cinemas PN

If I could be bothered to go and look up my review of Suicide Squad from whenever-ago it was, I would probably find that I gave it a lukewarm review at best.  As time has faded, though, I find myself unable to recall a single significant thing about that film, which probably tells me everything I need to know.  It was a crap film.

The Suicide Squad (that won't get confusing at all) is a completely different kettle of fish (or sharks).  Directed by James Gunn, the humour is much better and he clearly channels the fun elements that made the Guardians of the Galaxy films so entertaining.  Rated R16, there is plenty of gore and violence, but it's done with a comic-book style glee that makes it feel joyous rather than grim.  The ensemble cast is well-balanced, even with the bigger names of Margot Robbie and Idris Elba happily sharing the screen with the rest of the squad.  Elba, playing Bloodsport, plays off well against John Cena's Peacemaker character.  Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn is a scene-stealer again, but it doesn't detract from the rest of the film.  Even Joel Kinnaman is tolerable.  In fact, it says quite a lot that actors I am normally very "meh" about like Kinnaman and Cena aren't half as irritating as they might have been.  I think it's because the film is edited very well to not give dominance to one single character - it's really well balanced.

Plot? The Squad are sent to destroy a thing, to stop a tyrannical coup using said thing to do bad stuff.  As you'd expect, it's largely inconsequential - the journey is more important than the destination.  Rather than getting bogged down in plot-driven story, it's a light and accessible character-study of a group of anti-heroes.  It's fun.  And that's good.

We give a 8/10, entertaining. Has a body count of 77.

As it is a similar movie to the John Wick series:

John Wick = 91 deaths (yes, sadly, that includes the puppy)
John Wick: Chapter 2 = 119 deaths
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum = 167 deaths

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Some good humour which keeps it going, For some reason I would have liked to have seen more of Weasel I thought he was cool.

Completely different to the first.

I would recommend seeing it 😀

The Forever Purge

5/10

If you've seen the other Purge movies, and expecting this one to be good, yeah, its not. Just an excuse to shoot some blank rounds off from storage I think.
