tchart: Yep, Ive got 2GB in my HP netbook I got from HN on boxing day. To clarify even though the XP sticker says it ULPC its XP home which can use more than 1gb. So its not actually ULPC evben though its licensed that way to the OEM.

Out of curiousity, did the Asus come with a restore disk/media. I had to build my own restore media (onto USB stick) from the I386 directory as the HP didnt come with anything to restore from.

A fresh install from USB got rid of all the junk HP put on.

There is a ghost image on the support media, along with all drivers etc.

Nice! Took me a few days to slip stream the SATA drivers into the XP media (since XP doesnt have these by default).

So is there software to create a bootable USB with the Ghost image?

I havent put it under great strain yet but the performance is better (eg when having multiple tabs open in IE etc). It was worth the $80.

There is a winpe.iso file in the root directory of the DVD, and just noticed there is a hidden 5GB partition on the netbook itself. I can't run the setup file on the DVD here, systems are locked down a bit tight for that.

Restoring from the hidden partition is a simple task by the looks of it.
Partitioning is:
47MB EFI system Partition
72GB NTFSSystem Partition
72GB NTFS partition
5GB PE FAT32 Partition

@tchart couldn't you have just created a ghost of the drive when you first got it, as I believe it comes with bundled software allowing you to do thus. How did you create a boot disk from the 386 folder? Are there instructions on the net for doing that.

Has everyone forgotten thE fct that the origional was an atom 280??

It doesn't matter all that much, the 60mhz extra and extra 133mhz fsb on the N280 makes not much difference at all. For those without Bluetooth you can get one off ebay for about $30-40 delivered, it's easy to install and doesn't void the warranty, Just do a search for 1005HA Bluetooth and you'll find the cable and dongle for internal or spend $6NZD and get a nano bluetooth

2gb makes a large different i think, it terms on running programs on the Atom processors. There is no 1gb limit as explained before. Also if installing 2gb ram into a 1001HA like the 1005HA you need to goto the bios and turn off "Boot Booster" go into windows the full 2gb will show, restart, goto bios and renable boot blaster :)

i believe the greatest benefit of the N280 over the N270 is decreased power consumption, but having a 6 Cell Battery voids thats a bit anyway.

Indeed.

A couple of things;

1) I got a bit carried away and started installing stuff before I figured out there was no restore partition etc
2) There is some bundled Roxio software that cant do a backup. I doubt its a good as Ghost. I never tried this as I wanted to be able to rebuild from a USB stick.

Regarding the boot disk, there are lots of guides (mainly EEE focussed) but basically you take the I386 directory (which is 95% of the install media) and create an iso image. The hardest part was integrating the SATA drivers into the XP setup files - otherwise it cant detect the HDD.

I'm tempted to just wipe it with no regard for restore partitions etc. But i suppose i shuld take it into account. If someone can come up with a nice method for getting an ISO image made that would be nice.

Im putting Win7 Pro on both of mine after putting in 2gb of ram.

I am hoping for Bluetooth for mouse, they use less power.

Amount of ram, Because it's os XP(32bit) it limits the amount of addressable ram to around 3.5GB,
but I still want to put a 4GB SODIMM DDR2 800mhz, knowing that it will only be able to use at most 3.5GB.

But I don't know if there is anything in the netbooks hardware that would prevent this, on a 32bit xp desktop you can put that much ram in and it's works (only showing 3.5GB).

Anyone done any tests in this area.

Would be interested in a full rundown of specs for someone that has one.

ie dump CPU-Z logs, chipset/graphics chipset model, wifi card model etc.

Yeah the netbooks hardware prevents anything higher than 2gb being put in it unfortunately. It's an intel chipset limitation on most netbooks(apart from the N330 ion powered ones, 1201N)

I think the netbook will only accept up to 2 GB, so the 3.5GB restriction would matter.

I see DSE are selling the 1001HA with 6 cell battery for $AU599 Aus, so this is a good deal.
