Pimples just under the skin that aren't quite ready to pop but are building up an annoying amount of pressure.

Vodafone. I setup forwarding for both my old paradise.net.nz and clear.net.nz email addresses, but got another phone call today to say email to me was bounced back.

The obnoxoius weed named wandering jew (Tradescantia fluminensis ).

This has an amazing reslience to most forms of herbicide ( and hydrocarbon)  control.

In preparation to planting a new lawn, a fair portion was covered with this thrice damned weed. Most other weeds succumbed to a couple of passes of glyphosate.

Not this stuff - I trried double strength glyphosate, I have tried Weed Weapon ( glyphosate with Saflufenacil ). I have even tried the scorched earth approach and sprayed upcoming shoots with petrol !!!! Everything curled up and died !!! You would have thought wandering jew would follow suit. ?

Nah, a few days later, more green shoots popping up.

Damned. Stuff. Just. Doesn't. Die !!!!

Looks like I'm gonna have to carefully scrape out the vine from wherever it is buried, and bin it in a bucket of petrol.

Grrr...

When I encounter these herbicide resistant weeds I usually win with a cocktail of glyphosate and triclopyr plus dye-and-stick.

I've had trouble with Acanthus which now that I know what it is, I see all over Auckland. Glyphosate on it's own not super effective but my cocktail does the trick, especially if I get spray on the underside of the leaves. Like wantering jew, it will re-germinate from a scrap.

Just be grateful you’re not trying to get rid of Japanese Knotweed.

We had that on an estate I managed and the only chemical that had any effect on it cost a fortune. It’s quite widely spread in the UK and almost impossible to be rid of.

@SepticSceptic Use woody weed killer instead. (mixture of 2,4,D and Dicamba) It is a selective broadleaf weed killer. Meaning it will kill things line wandering dew and morning glory vine. But wont kill most grasses. Have successfully used it to spray morning glory vine that was getting through my lawn, with only minimal damage to the grasses.

Then there is also Amitrole. Which is strong enough to kill bamboo. And is also a "kill everything" type of herbicide.

Use a penetrant with the above weed killers when spraying the wandering dew and anything else with waxy type leaves.

I find glyphospate to be pretty much a waste of time.

Glyphosate was developed primarily for spraying out pasture prior to renewal and for spraying out arable weeds before drilling.
It wasn't intended for use on "difficult" woody weeds or plants beyond a certain size. It's very good used properly but there are better agrochemical tools in the box for that kind of problem.

I was looking at putting in a new lawn in fine fescue so that I could use "Gallant" to periodically spray out weeds without affecting the grass... but it looks like Gallant is hard to find and extremely expensive. Are there any other options for this kind of approach?

If I recall my crop husbandry lectures adequately, it would be possible to spray broadleaf weeds out of grass but very difficult to control.

Spray the lawn with sulphate of ammonia or use a lawn food containing that - it will discourage weeds at least. Things like Gallant will be hard to get now unless you have the appropriate licences and so forth. Even buying bulk Roundup is getting harder. Tip for Roundup (Glyphosate) users - mix it with a wetting agent such as Activator before use. It will cut the rain-fast time to an hour or less and make the uptake of the chemical by the weed plants much faster.

Not so worried about broad leaves. What worries me is invasive grasses paspalum and kikuyu. It comes in from birds, peoples shoes, grows through from the neighbours etc. There seems to be no easy way to get rid of it other than spot spraying or hand pulling, which leaves a hole in the lawn.

Bugger, I thought as much, although the fine fescue/gallant think seemed a panacea. I suspect that option is still there if you are paying $$$ for a lawn maintenance company to do the work.

Looks like Gallant Ultra is just a concentrated form of Haloxyfop and is generally available... so maybe the fine fescue option and periodic spot or carpet bombing with this stuff is an option?
