Airport terminal layouts where you have to walk through the (cluttered) duty free shop, to get to your gate.
Airport terminal layouts where you must walk a long convoluted path past acres of shops that is ten times longer than the straight line distance.
When the irritation of the long walks becomes unbearable, you'll be offered an "express lane" direct from check-in to gate, for which you'll be asked to pay.
You're the product being sold to the shop owners, who in return pay exorbitant rents to the airport owner. No different than food stalls at sports grounds.
Express pass often simply gets a faster lane throguh security or customs. There isn't necessarily a short cut involved.
I understand the reasoning but it's still annoying. Long haul travel is draining enough without 25,000 steps tacked onto either end of it.
