Thanks everyone :-). Had a whole pile of stuff descend on me at the end of last year so decided to take a break from posting for awhile, although I was reading various threads from time to time.

And since this is small things that make you smile, meet Eddie, new addition to the household after we lost our elderly rescue kitty a few months ago.

Aww so cute. Love the light grey white tabby. Was trying to find one last year and then gave up when I learned that Lillies are very toxic to them and my Xmas Lillies are flourishing and so beautiful I don’t have the heart to uproot them.

Lots of things are toxic to cats with lilies being just one of a long list, but you're pretty unlikely to lose a cat to them, probably the only way would be if the lilies got crushed for some reason, a cat brushed against them and got sap on it, and then licked its fur clean. We had a huge stand of self-seeded arum lilies at the bottom of the garden that various cats used to go past and none of them ever showed any problem symptoms.

If you are thinking of adopting now would be a good time, the SPCA put out an appeal recently because their shelters are overflowing. If you're in Orkland I can recommend the shelter we got Eddie from, he still has three brothers waiting for adoption.

Plenty of cat rescue organisations around that area overflowing with cats and kittens at the moment.
One way to solve the lilly issue is to have indoor only cats. So much safer for them. After losing two to cars in a few months, I'm only having indoor cats now. They aren't bothered and while they would definitely go exploring outside if I let them, they aren't interested otherwise.

It really depends on both your location and the cat, for example our previous cat was an ex-feral and got very distressed if she was kept indoors - her safe place was outdoors, so if something startled her she'd jump out of a window in an attempt to be anywhere but inside the house. Having said that, we live in a quiet cul-de-sac with reasonable-sized gardens where the neighbours cats visit each other, hang out together, and get fed communally at whoever's house they're hanging out at. OTOH there are places, and cats, where you definitely don't want them outdoors, e.g. light-coloured cats that have problems in the sun or if there's a busy road nearby. It really depends on your situation.

And before anyone says "but they kill birds!", we've had a small tribe of quails raised on the property every year for at least ten years without any of the more-than-adequately-fed neighbourhood cats showing the slightest interest in them. Not to mention pigeons, fantails, sparrows, and a thrush that used to walk across the kitchen floor, eat from the cat's food bowl, and then walk out again. But if they're a hunter that would be another reason to keep a cat indoors.

To answer your question. No, I think they all went to the same school/think tank. How can we create the most pain for the average commuter (motor vehicle or cyclist)? Perhaps they achieve the same for public transport too.
