Dune: I've read all the books and found the latest film adaptation a bit disappointing.  The trippy bits were too long.  The movie was almost three hours long.  Either a shorter film or richer storytelling would have been better.  It was a bit hard to follow in places for people who haven't read the book.

Red Notice: Oceans ## +  True Lies = Red Notice  It's funny.  You'll only want to watch it once and even then it'll feel like you've seen it all before.

OLD HENRY (iTunes Rental) 7.5/10

A widowed farmer and his son warily take in a mysterious, injured man with a satchel of cash. When a posse of men claiming to be the law come for the money, the farmer must decide who to trust. Defending a siege of his homestead, the farmer reveals a talent for gun-slinging that surprises everyone calling his true identity into question.

I enjoyed this sometimes brutal Western, with a couple of unexpected twists. The first half of the movie is a slow build up to the action that follows.

Tim Blake Nelson is excellent as "Henry"

Dune 2021 Amazon Prime Video.  At US$25 to hire it was way cheaper to do this  than for the 3 of use to travel 45 minutes to Hamilton, pay for admission, food etc.

Enjoyed the movies but would love to have seen this in Imax .  I hope that they don't wait for about  20 months before the part 2 is released.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 10/10

Loved it, loved it, loved it.

Good story with superb choreograph scenes with some comedy along the way.

King Richard 7/10

This is a biopic about the Williams family, focussed on Will Smith as Richard Williams. It’s a very cliche sports movie, in a good way. It’s got all the tropes you would expect but it’s very well done and an enjoyable watch. If you like sports movies it’s well worth a watch.

A low key, off beat thriller that was quite enjoyable

"Die Gstettensaga: The Rise of Echsenfriedl". Definitely the weirdest film I've seen since "The Bedsitting Room".

Rating out of ten: Two chopsticks and an avocado.

Shadow in the Cloud (Neon) 3/10

This was awful. I thought it was going to be good, based on the previews, but it was awful.

Also watched The Legend of Baron To'a on Sky Movies. With the exception of the ending, which I felt was a little weaker than the rest of the movie, it was a good watch. 6/10

My cousin was the stunt co-ordinator on this. When I asked him how was the movie he described it as "batshit crazy". I'm inclined to agree. Implausible plot and action scenes.

THE UNFORGIVABLE (Netflix) 7.5/10

A woman is released from prison after serving a sentence for a violent crime and re-enters a society that refuses to forgive her past.

A good performance here from Sandra Bullock. One of Netflix better offerings for 2021 IMO.

Lizard1977:

You're probably right about the whole "read the book before the movie" thing, and that puts the director in a bind - make the movie more expository for the uninitiated, or retain the story structure and keep a big chunk of your audience in the dark.  While big stories (like Lord of the Rings) did a really good job by splitting the movie into three parts, they also managed to make each movie relatively standalone.  While you do need to watch all three in the trilogy to get the full payoff, you can watch the first film and be "satisfied" (sort of).  With Dune, even the entire first book (which I believe is being filmed as two parts) is really only the prequel for the main stories which kick off with book 2 (Dune Messiah).  That's where the episodic approach would be more appropriate.  You can lay the groundwork in a two-part pilot episode, and flesh out the characters in 60 min chunks over the next 6 episodes, and bring the first story to a conclusion with a big finale for season one.

And Lord of the Rings was of course originally 3 books, so was already structured to suit 3 movies. I don't think it helped either that (to the best of my knowledge) it wasn't advertised as being "Part 1", so I went in expecting the full story. And I don't think they even knew they'd get to make Part 2, which is why we have such a long wait now.

They needed to make it clear in the advertising it was "Part 1", and needed to have filmed the entire thing together so they could release them a year (or less) apart.

This would work as the sequel to Shane (maybe)

THE VOYEURS (Amazon Prime) 7/10

A young couple, find themselves becoming interested in the sex life of their neighbors across the street. What starts as an innocent curiosity turns into an unhealthy obsession.

Let me start by saying that The Voyeurs could possibly be described as soft porn. I read several reviews on other sites before posting this one. It seems that you will either like it 5/5 or hate it 1/5. There were very few reviewers that opted for an average rating 3/5. That said, I have to say that I really enjoyed this film. There is an actual story between the sex scenes, and I was not quite expecting the satisfying ending (pun not intended 😁). I did think that another 10-15 minutes longer, would have given the director the opportunity to stretch out the ending a little more, as I thought it was a bit rushed

This was the first time that I had seen Sydney Sweeney in a movie, (although she has appeared in several other roles), Not the best actress around, but she more than makes up for that with her beauty.

And yet, "Shadow in the Cloud" among the best movies of 2021 (stuff.co.nz).  I've not seen it; and from what I'd previously heard, I don't want to.

I read that too and as a result can't take any review by James Croot seriously ever again; the movie is just awful.
