Shrinkflation. Again. Seriously. Went to get a few bits at New World this morning, and they've bought some new carrying baskets, and even those bloody things are smaller. Arrrrrgh.

 

 

I noticed that too. I wasn't sure whether they were actually smaller or just looked that way due to being more "rounded" but I suspect that you're right.

 

Was too busy moaning to myself about it to measure properly, but then all the old baskets have conveniently disappeared so you can't compare directly and the metal wheely things they sit in look less than filled. If I can't fit a loaf in sideways like I used to there's going to be a (really small) revolution in EBOP.

In Auckland, it's all in one bin.

In Thames-Coromandel we have to put glass ina crate, paper/plastic/metal in the wheelie bin.

This is their reasoning...

Glass can contaminate other recyclable materials.
Glass collected in mixed recycling often breaks and contaminates other recyclable materials. As a result, a lot of the glass collected in mixed recycling now goes to landfill, along with all the other materials in the bin that it contaminates

I can promise, there will be far more glass going to landfill after this change.People pay for collection services for a reason.

It sounds like it might backfire though, council are now looking at bringing waste collection back in-house....

Waste management have labelled this new scheme 'bins for better communities'.    More like marketing people spinning crap ...meh!

Yes, and this should have been the solution. But, I think this is really just a cost reduction exercise using the environment as an excuse.   Kind of like hotels telling you to reuse towels.

Same in Whakatane (the bit about Thames I mean). Recycling alternates with green waste so they get done every two weeks.

In Wellington we have separate paper/plastic and glass collection days. There's no "contamination". Done.

Tauranga, council outsourced waste collections to private companies so the council has no control (although, maybe they were careless for not mandating minimum standards)

Actually, we took our cubs on a tour of the recycling plant, where they have some very clever machinery that separates out the different types ff recyclables.

I'm not sure if it all then goes behind a curtain and put in a truck to the landfill through...

We pay a private contractor for ours because SWDC do not come as far as our house, a whole 3 minutes drive from the centre of the village..! They still want $3,000+ a year in rates, of course.

The regional council here is doing "Long Term Plan" consultation. One of the questions they have is around how to fund bus services.

Option 1. Increase rates.
Option 2. Increase rates in a different way.
Option 3. Increase rates in a third way.

How about "charge the people that actually use the buses"?
