Using calibration software called Lady Heather to calibrate a GPSDO (GPS-disciplined frequency standard), then finding out who Lady Heather actually was (all links SFW).

Geektastic: I’m presently in Sydney.

The sheer buzz is a noticeable improvement on what feels like an increasingly regressing NZ these days.

Tradesmen are at work even today (Sunday), fit and happy people are out with dogs in the CBD enjoying the weather and breakfast, streets are being swept, there’s a buzz and a feeling of economic positivity in general.

We never really considered living here and we’re probably too settled and old to bother moving, but I can absolutely see why younger folks are moving here.

I think we’ll be visiting much more often than we have in the just 20 years.

Thats the exact feeling we had when there a few months back. It just felt prosperous and upbeat and people looked happy. I tried to figure out what it was and noted that the streets hadn’t been pulled apart for cycle lanes and parking taken out which has ruined most of the businesses here in Wellington and killed the vibe it used to have. I also admit to wanting to pack up and move over but the practical difficulties of housing etc are too onerous.

Friend is moving to Wollongong and says it’s a lot easier to do it there.

Same. No homeless drunk or drug addled rough sleepers in shop doorways. Sydney feels safe unlike Auckland’s Queen street.

Similar in Melbourne.

Not sure where you are in Melbourne, but when I was there in December, PLENTY of homeless and beggers around the place. I am in Brisbane this week and it's awful here.

Also, what's with all the smokers in Australia? Feels like you can't go 50m without smelling smoke!

Finally a NZ Herald story that actually made me chuckle out loud

"A pack of rats invaded a New Orleans police station and ate a stash of marijuana in the building’s evidence room.

Anne Kirkpatrick, the police superintendent, told the city council on Monday that an infestation of the rodents had played havoc with the force’s headquarters.

The rats are eating our marijuana,” she told the council’s criminal justice committee. “They’re all high.”"

Finding that Five Guys are in Sydney.

Last one I ate in was in Houston.

I’m pleased to say that the Australian version was equally sublime. Best burgers ever.

Fingers crossed. They’re expensive (about $50 for two burgers, one fries and bottomless soda) but worth every cent.

Cheap fast food they are not. They’re the burgers as you always imagined burgers could be.

So is mcdonalds now. When I go there and spend $34 on food I question why I didnt just go to an indian place and get a curry and beer and naan which ends up only a little more.

Where do you think discarded dairy cows "disappear" to? And that's not an urban legend.

Journeyman:

"Restructuring". Doesn't affect me personally and I shouldn't talk about details, but I'll just make the observation that it always seems that redundancies start from the bottom up when it should be the other way around. Very displeased 🤬🤬

I've pulled the above quote from the Annoy thread but decided to post in the Smile thread because  this is the umpteenth restructure in my 40 odd year working life and I've basically stopped giving a ****, and the business jargon bollocks is what made me smile and cringe.  This was part of an update email I received this morning:

"If you’ve engaged with the recent post from <big cheese name> or the latest <business unit> hui, you’ll know some changes on the horizon have been announced for <business unit> to a evolve a more functionally orientated, centralised approach."

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?
