Nope, it's still inVIsible and not worth a "war". As an early guy knowing the circuit diagrams of the Apple II and IBM XT computer I'm not required to conserve geronto-archeological commands of early Unix data processing as long as I'm able to learn new things and to follow the digital evolution. You are absolutely free to stick with vi but please understand, that I don't look back when I have to join for the future. :-)

"Tactical" stuff. "Tactical" seems to be the new buzzword. e.g. "Tactical flashlights". I mean, what *I* want is a *strategic* flashlight.

Basically, two major vendors of networking kit have modified a standard fibre-optic connection module to ensure you have to buy their version at greatly inflated prices. If their kit detects non-vendor-approved hardware, they can refuse to diagnose any problems.

Now that I write that, it reminds me of Apple, really.... :-)

Their website and valuation objection procedures are at least 10 years out of date. Just hopeless. Like their valuations which do not actually use valuers... A prime example of what a lack of competition achieves.

For example, I attempted to object to one of their rating valuations - only to have their website tell me that they do not maintain the rating valuations for that council, despite my having their letterhead valuation on behalf of that council in front of me...so now I will need to waste yet more of my time on the phone with them tomorrow pandering to their inefficiency.

These are sad stories but I can’t help thinking they’re a bit like the financial version of the Darwin Awards. I’ll probably get pilloried for saying this but I just can’t believe some people are so stupid or gullible.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Some of them are immensely dim. The one I was most surprised by was one where some guy was duped into believing the IRD would arrest him that day if he did not pay a large sum of "tax" he owed ...... in iTunes gift cards.

I realise that some of these scams are very slick indeed, but come on. Who would really believe the IRD accepted iTunes credit?!

It's no secret that the elderly are over-represented in the scam-victim stats.

A lot of them possibly don't know what iTunes is and a small portion (I expect and hope that the success percentage of these sorts of scams is extremely low) of those may be led into believing that the cards are a genuine form of payment. May sound foolish to those (the majority of us ) who know better but if you're completely unaware of these things and someone told you this is Google Pay, this is Apple Pay and this is iTunes Pay, on the surface there is probably little to suggest that two of those are kosher and the third isn't.

(Just wearing my empathy hat here. )

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Well back in their day there were equally bizzare ways to pay people like cheques and money orders from the post office etc so I can see how people who insulate themselves from progress could be lead to believe that those are the same. But for someone to be that out of touch with things takes dedication.

I do not think the one I saw on Fair Go was elderly - more middle aged.

However, of course I am sure that there are others who may well be as you suggest.

Perhaps Apple need to start printing "Not a form of payment to anyone but Apple" or something in big letters on the cards!

Also surely another clue would have been the fact that banks don't offer iTunes credit as a funds withdrawal option.

Yesterday there was a tree on the line. Today she can't even get out of Martinborough because there has been too much rain and the bridges are closed....

What's the point of a bridge that has to be shut because there's too much water?
