Just found CTC in letterbox from Poste Haste. No attempt was made to deliver....card just already written out as he crossed the road and placed in letterbox!
I have full video surveillance of the property so have the "evidence" of no attempt made. Will call in at their office this morning and show them as I pick the item up.
And people pay extra for sig reqd etc and the courier makes no attempt!

Courierpost still suck here. (Upper Riccarton, Christchurch)
Parcel scanned out for delivery at 5.27am this morning
9.02am scanned back at the depot!
Phone up and told out for next delivery cycle this morning.
No sign of it being back out for delivery at 2.30pm so phone again.
Person will check depot.
3.27pm delivered.... yet was still showing as being at the depot.
More times than not I have to drive out to the airport to pick the items up even though I am one block from Blenheim Road and there is a school in the street too.

Once I had a parcel sent c/- Upper Riccarton Post Office.... went to collect - no sign of it.... yet tracking showed it should be there - short version was they opened it! Then put it on a courier to my address as per the paperwork in the parcel! Of course no-one was home to sign so had to pickup from airport!

It's always the items you are desperate for that the couriers screw up.... 2 other parcels arrived this week extraordinarily fast as I didn't need them in a hurry of course!

I get courier packages all the time (from Massey Uni library), and they are usually delivered between 7.20-8am. I'm also in a residential area.

However, I guess if they couldn't open the gate, and required a signature delivery, then they'd have to leave a card to call. But, if they were on the road surely they could have turned around and attempted a re-delivery.

Had a case of wine to be delivered a couple of weeks ago. My girlfriend (who works from home and can see the front gate from her office) just happened to see a crumpled up card to call blowing around our front courtyard. No details were on the card at all other than tracking number. Upon calling the courier company (forget which one) they told us there was a package waiting for us. We live in a group of townhouses where all letterboxes are at the start of a shared driveway, some 15 metres away from our front courtyard...

Second bad experience was last week. We had a photo printed on a 2m x 1m canvas, and the company who printed it couriered it to us using Fastway. Upon receiving the tracking number from the canvas company, I saw that it was out for delivery, and 21 seconds later had a status update of card to call. Upon ringing Fastway, we were told that the courier driver had refused to deliver the canvas due to its size, and that the Fastway branch at that picked it up never should have accepted it. They wanted us to come and pick it up! Luckily after a bit of negotiation at both ends we had it delivered that afternoon.

I am getting less and less impressed with courier companies. We've been getting a number of card to calls lately making me wonder if they have changed to a service of just delivering cards...

As online shopping has taken off, so has business for couriers.

They are busier than ever, but it seems that it means that they are also getting lazier. Why deliver all the items when you can just card them and make the customer come pick up from your warehouse?

Courier gets paid either way, but if even 10% of people end up going to the warehouse to pick up as a result of this strategy - that's 10% less work for the courier driver.

I believe most couriers operate as a franchise and buy the rights to delivery in a certain area for the company they work for. So the courier companies probably can't do much like add extra couriers to routes either - as it would be up to the franchisee to decide to do this (and wear the cost).

I suspect "courier culture" has evolved to the point where they do agressively look for any excuse to toss a card and run. Less work. Easier day. Go home earlier.....and the pay is the same.

If you were a courier, why would you not do it? Especially as the practice seems to be spreading and 'everyone" now does it.

I wonder if the market needs some regulation?

The idea is that market is self regulated by a range of competitors.

However what's happening is that price has dropped across the board and all providers are not delivering service that's being sold.

As you say, they're just dropping a card and calling it done. But in fact, when that happens, the service hasn't been provided that was sold.

The sender assumes the package will be delivered. While I'm quite sure it says "we can drop a card" in the ToC, that's not really the service that's being sold is it?

Does this need a ComCom investigation?

Just had NZ Post do this on Saturday, Got a registered mail package and I was home all day. No attempt was made to come to the door, just put the card in the box.

Usually you know if they come to the door as they leave the card on the doorstep, rather than putting in the box.

Went to NZ Post on the "next working day" to pick it up and they don't have it yet. What is the point of saying next working day if they aren't going to have it next working day after a weekend.

Anyway the staff at the collection area said I should complain that they made no attempt to delivery it properly.

I had a courier ring the doorbell, dropped a card and just get back into his van today, he'd just selected reverse when I tapped on his window... gave him the card, and he gave me the 'electronic gadget' to sign - and I had my parcel.
The time between him ringing and hitting reverse would have been 10-15 seconds, max.

Still, no real complaint as I got my parcel this time :-)

I think alot of this problem is due to the systems that the courier companies use to pay their drivers. A friend of mine used to own a courierpost run. He said he got paid a very small fee per package delivered and a larger fee for each package picked up. Courier post paid him a garunteed min amount each month. He said since his run mostly covered residential areas he never managed to exceed the min payment.

I suspect that the increase in people buying stuff online means an increase in deliveries but no increase in pickups. (unless the driver is lucky enough to have a warehouse run by an online shopping website open in their area). Therefore an increase in the amount of work but no increase in the payments to courier drivers. Therefore some drivers are becoming sloppy in their work. Unfortunately since each driver has an exclusive area. If you are getting poor service your only options are to complain to the courier company or request the sender to use a different courier company.

Ha ha, brilliant logic! I would do it if I were a courier because it would be my job. If I continually cut corners at work I will eventually be fired. Laziness is no excuse. Neither is the 'well everyone else does it" mentality.

My SO has ordered a dinner set from Macy's US. Total shipping cost was NZ$65 via DHL arranged through Macy's shipping agent. It's arriving now in dribs and drabs - first parcel yesterday with the dinner plates, via DHL, in a carton about 500x500x300. Three other packages are on the way. The receipts and shipping tracking documents list freight cost. Was transshipped from Ohio to LA, O/N then cleared in AKL, O/N freight to Chch then sent out for delivery. Total shipping cost for that package was NZ$16 (&GST - payable on the whole consignment). I don't think the local delivery agent's share of that $16 would be very much.

In the past, couriers probably delivered mostly to businesses, who almost always have someone there to receive.

These days, with many deliveries to residential properties where people aren't home, I imagine couriers had spend a long time waiting for people to answer doors who aren't there, which has led to a culture of carding straight away on the assumption no one is home in order to not waste so much time standing around.

Waiting 30 seconds at each of house to then have to write out a card would soon add up.
