I think if we take every corner, bridge and culvet in the roading network, and place a cross so they are everywhere and blend in with background noise.

Then when someone dies at one of these pre-crossed locations, the family may place a small engraved notice on the cross, or nearest cross to the event.

First to die involving a bridge gets naming rights for said bridge.

Ban flowers and everything else.

KiwiNZ: I sit here wondering how many of those thinking these should be removed because approx 1 meter x 1 meter cross is so very dangerous use their cell phones when driving, change their Stereo settings or GPS settings whilst driving and drive after drinking.

Personally I have no issues with a simple cross.
Its all the spinning wheels and flags that seem to go with it.

Culture is just a NZ word for 'habit' as far as I can see - or in some cases a word for 'nonsense' (such as diverting roads to avoid "water spirits" in the 21st century).

My ancestor's culture was to burn people alive in wicker effigies of their gods at Beltane, but we've moved on from there and I don't suppose any suggestion to restart the practice would be gaining much support. Culture changes and adapts or it becomes restraining and faintly ludicrous in many cases.

The road side markers that I find distracting and hazardous are the reflector panels that the NZTA plaster around corners. They are supposed to be offset to the approach so that headlights aren't returned directly at drivers. Many are not.

OT, fun fact. Yellow reflective marker pegs are only installed on left hand bends.

Advertising billboards with small fonts, actually advertising billboards in general, they have no place beside roads.

human nature..!!....i find when driving by!! a roadside memorial, that it does create "inattention" as passengers coment .!!or the drivers attention, wanders to how,the person ended up dead on a straight road..!!..only takes seconds of" inattention "at 100kph..!!changing radio stations, putting on makeup etc...i think just a small cross!!...flowers on grave at the cemetery!!not roadside...i honestly dont think the dead person would like to see relatives die putting flowers at the spot...commonsense prevails!!...people need to take "driving seriously!!...less layback mentality!!...i spent hours driving around auckland,as part of employment, and the idiotic things i saw on the road, the crosses dont surprise me,that there are not more!!

How many people have you heard of being killed while laying flowers at side of the road? I can't find any references from a good search for any similar situations in NZ.

Anyone can be injured during a moments inattention on the road... the only sure fire way to avoid injury or death is to ban driving and walk everywhere. PC madness.

I can't say I've ever driven passed a shiney cross with a wind mill on it and told myself that it was a hazard to drivers everywhere.
Crosses or no crosses there will always be something else to distract an inexperienced driver.

Probably not if you regard honesty as bigotry I am afraid!

No doubt I'll be flamed but I think they are ridiculous.

The person is no doubt buried somewhere, or their ashes are. Go mourn there, why decorate the road? You mourning the road??
