I think you'll find he has no criminal convictions, and as such, if you had been arrested in SA for something and either not convicted or had the conviction squashed, you'd also have no problem. You'd also find that if you had a minor conviction against you, but offered to make a substantial deposit into a NZ bank for a long term or you offered to start a massive business, you'd get that residency problem sorted. This is standard practice under the National Government and I know of a situation personally where this has been the case.

take away the word, National party, this is standard Government practice

Yup. There's actually a special Investor category of Immigration Visa. Australia does it too.

You weren't supplying proof that you had no criminal record.
You were supplying proof that you had no "undeclared" criminal record..

One might ask about the ethical practices of our PM's previous employer Merril Lynch , I use "previous" very lightly.
They admitted to causing the global financial crisis and became the biggest 'govt beneficiaries' of all time as a result.
I wonder who is funding the smear campaign on several parties at present? Is that really ethical?

Yeah, but I would still sooner give the PM $1k to invest on my behalf than KDC.

Having a “criminal record” does, and should not preclude immigrating to New Zealand (or Canada, the USA, Australia etc).

Generally, as long as you declare such criminal convictions, a "fair" decision will be made- taking into account the age of the conviction, likelihood you'll re-offend and so on.

Quite the opposite.

I'm one of those people that buys random penny stocks from time to time. I have found that with absolutely no research and only dumb luck, this seems to break even most years and results in the accumulation of stock that may or may not do anything over time. It just so turns out, that by complete dumb luck, I bought a few thou shares of a little shell company called TRS a year ago at 0.001.

So, I'm there already and it's already 10x it's value.

sell TRS while you still can. Its only worth that "value" when you have the cash in your pocket

Of course an opinion of “good character” and “likelihood of reoffence” is subjective, and - as it turned out - so is the definition of “criminal record” and “deportation” :)
