One of Air NZ's issues in particular is at Wellington where screening at the gate becomes a bottleneck with the move from 737s to A320s with 40 more people. If people all turn up at the last minute it really slows boarding. This should hopefully get better when the airport moves to centralized screening at the end of the pier.

I've flown a lot of Air NZ WLG to NPL flights over the last 12 months - usually the last flight of the day on a Sunday evening. Because it's the last flight of the day, they often appear to deliberately delay it and wait for passengers off of connecting flights. I actually consider this a good thing.

Good. Why should they? if anything they should be more expensive. They take up the same amount of space, yet if traveling alone require more attention than audlts.

Along with less routes, Believe there's a bit of a loophole in those 'best off the gate times' that they boast about too.

If you re-schedule the flightplan, when they are late or delayed and make adjustments, the original timing is void the and clock starts again from the scheduled boarding period at the new time ;) 2hrs late? doesn't matter.. we were off the gate within 5mins of when we said we would the second time for pushback!

problem with that is Jetstar don't travel everywhere try getting a cheap fair from any of the main cities to Napier as for air NZ well even they are expensive over $200 for my 13 year old son to travel from Napier to Auckland that's ludicrous

there are tons of cheap flights Auckland-Napier. usually start at around $70 and on occasion are cheaper. when is your son flying? 8am on a Monday when the flights are basically sold out?

You can get cheap regional flights if you are able to plan ahead. If you need to fly regional in hurry you get shafted. I accept that regional services are more expensive to operate, but I still believe AirNZ are exploiting the lack of competition on some routes.

About the children giving up their seats, it technically applies to all NZ Bus buses in Auckland AFAIK. See e.g. Go West http://www.gowest.co.nz/terms-and-conditions-gowest (#36). I'm pretty sure I've seen this for a long time, since the Stage Coach days. And the T&C suggest it's been the case since 1991. However although I never travelled much in buses which had that many children, in particular children when the bus was full (on the routes I mostly used, the bus only tended to be full at peak times with adults travelling between the city and the Henderson area), except perhaps during the World Cup, I can't recall it being common practice.

I thought I saw it somewhere else but it's not in the current Transdev T&C http://www.transdev.co.nz/media/docs/20130925_TDAK_Conditions_of_Carriage.pdf

Incidentally http://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/news/10026867/Should-kids-get-cheaper-seats-on-planes suggest Qantas has also abandoned child fares (although I didn't read it that well).
