Glassboy: What is X-Factor?

A hashtag I muted on twitter...
other than that I have no idea. Reality TV sux. (Unless it's Top Gear, Grand Designs or Selling Houses Australia).

I know it's over the top and probably scripted, but I quite enjoy Storage Wars.

I think this long thread highlights reality TV. Bad ads are effective, we all hate them, but we know the product. Bad scripted, aggressive reality shows get the same attention. Jeremy Clarkson is a good example as is this X Factor. Its not about reality TV, its about bad sh&t that gets people yakking, making it a must watch for many. Its nothing to do with talent. American Idol and Simon Cowell is yet another example. Its not reality TV or talent shows, its all about anti-ness, agro, getting the masses talking about it. These are Un Reality shows. Escapism from reality, not reality

heylinb4nz: Agree, its even enticed me to watch it tonight...which makes me wonder if it was arranged stunt, because I generally despise these type of shows.

Well I managed to stomach 5 minutes of the show before turning it off. Sometimes you wish you could un-watch something (like the first time you saw your parents naked, or that creepy YouTube vid of the parasite coming out of a praying mantis), if people seriously watch this trashy rubbish then the human race is certainly doomed.

Next petition at change.org... take X factor off air.

mattwnz: Top gear used to be good when they mainly used to review cars. But these fictional competitions they run have just got silly, and they now tend to take up the whole show.

I've been enjoying Fifth Gear lately, they still actually review cars (and some that "normal" people can afford).

Top Gear was good but I have given up on it due to xenophobia and racism and other prejudices

That is part of what makes it good.

Top Gear last night was actually a good one. None of the silly fake scripted competitions.

The problem is that Tif (I think that is his name) is a bit annoying. I guess he could be a suitable  Clarkson replacement, but he is a little  mainstream, more like May. People like the naughty boy clarkson.

Wasn't Tiff the original Clarkson on Top Gear many, many moons ago?

Very likely. Fifth gear is essentially what top gear used to be like.

Tiff Needell only cares about drifting a car round the track. The better it goes round something sideways the better. Which i don't see as very objective at all.

Clarkson has a persona that takes a strong view of a product. He either says something is good for a car, or no good [and he adds whether he would like to own one but you don't have to listen to that bit]. That's what i like about him. That's the only thing I like about him apart from stringing together hilarious metaphors. Otherwise he is a big bell ... umm  ... that's what his co hosts call him anyway.

I don't watch either of them for everyday car reviews.

I didn't know the last two judges from a bar of soap and only know Shelton through his controversial legal case with Blindspott as drummer.  Now he's being criticized for painting his face the colour black.  The world has gone mad, or mainstream news outlets are milking this XFactor craze for all it's worth.  What if he painted his face yellow?  Is there any particular nationality that might claim offense with that colour?  Is there anyone here that is black who is actually genuinely offended and would like him to not paint his face a colour in the future? I saw a black person with his face painted white at a party once.  I didn't feel a need to go up to him and say, "Hey!  Racist black man.  Take my colour off of your face!  That's for European people!".

As for Top/Fifth Gear...I can't stand Tiff Needell.  I LOVE Jeremy Clarkson.  I believe Tiff and the others left what is commonly referred to as "Old Top Gear" (by the current Top Gear trio) because Jeremy was such an oaf and they got sick of him.

I can't imagine Jeremy being very nice to meet or talk to in person, but on TV he is practically part of the family.  I'd imagine it's a case of "Don't meet your heroes" as they say, funnily enough, on Top Gear.  He feels like my uncle, which is exactly why everyone loves him so much.  He's like that controversial family member always against the grain making polarizing comments about other family members.  He forgets all the PC crap about countries, religions, stereotypes, colours, people's feelings...etc and just says what he thinks is funny in the name of entertainment.

Some of the more recent controversies Clarkson has been involved in are sketchy and practically non issues at best.  They only gain so much traction because of the media storm someone like Jeremy creates.  Regardless of what BBC say, I genuinely think Jeremy is bigger than the BBC and that kind of profile brings out the pro Clarkson camp and the anti-Clarkson camp, then they start fighting on the internet.

Can't wait to see more of Clarkson on other shows in the future if he were to leave Top Gear.  I'm sure all his avid fans would follow him wherever he may go.  After all, he is family.
