A taser seems harsh. Surely stern language followed by a cuddle would have resolved the situation without force.

Dratsab: I can't quite believe the moronity of people, especially a particular 3 News reporter, who seem to think that a taser should have been used - as if it's an appropriate or even effective weapon in an active shooter situation.

I don't think anyone here can truly judge the situation and the folks involved in this incident.

MikeAqua: These days media simply must 'go live' to someone on location.

It doesn't matter if they have anyone to talk to who has cogent, relevant or any information.  It doesn't matter if good audio quality is available as long as they go live on location.

Unless said location is a regional town, in which case going live on location to the nearest of Auckland Wellington or Christchurch will suffice.

For a NZ news story it's preferable for the interviewee to be a reporter employed by the same TV network, who knows nothing about the situation, and even less about grammar of spoken English, despite English being their first language.

For an international story any overseas reporter will do as long as English is a second language for them, they have very strong accent, don't know to pause after speaking on an international call, and are using a very poor phone/Skype line.  Overseas reporters do seem to know stuff but that's acceptable as long as listeners can't actually understand what they are saying.

And if it's snowing, or raining a lot, they have to send someone out in it to tell us what snow or rain is like.  While they are there, they ask everyone else what they think of the snow and the rain.

As I have observed before, we have too many news programs for a country in which nothing much happens.

Once a day would be more than adequate. On one channel. To be honest, once a week would probably be enough.

To be honest, it does not take me long to judge that someone taking a loaded firearm into McDonalds and discharging it needs putting down with extreme prejudice. A loony is a loony.

The next question will be where did he get the firearm and did the Police licence him to own it or was it illegal. (someone may have answered that somewhere but I have not seen it).

Its good they killed him anyway, Save us tax payers incarcerating him.

What a shameful attitude - you've converted a human tragedy into justification for summary execution.
Thank goodness people in positions of authority don't think like you do.
It's not "good" that they killed him - even though it was (probably) justified.  Next you'll be suggesting that the police staff member who at this stage can be presumed to have rightfully used lethal force as a last resort should be hoisted on to the shoulders by his comrades and be presented as a hero for the taxpayer - in some grand parade.  I expect that she/he is not feeling like celebrating.

+1 x 4 for your post.  Shame x 5 IMO - even if you were trying to be funny.

Remember he was someones son, grandson, brother.

According to Stuff,  "he was a good boy"

According to me, it was "a good shot".

We should now calculate how much he has cost the taxpayer over his lifetime and charge it against his estate as a debt.

Did you read that some stupid bint came out of the shop next to him and was getting him to put the gun down. Stupid cow, putting herself in harms way like that, the Police had no choice but to shoot him.

I really hope someone explains that to her.

Apparently according to this person, he was "just about to put the gun down and give himself up".
Last time I checked, CityStop wasn't in the habit of employing psychiatric qualified staff.  Though, who knows, maybe she decided on a career change from fixing people to providing them their fizzy beverage fix.

Stupid cow? We need more citizens like this. People with balls to get involved and try and help out. Even if it means putting ones self in danger!

If this went the other way. And he did put the gun down. Would she have still be been a stupid cow?

I think you missed the point, the Police rules of engagement mean that because she was standing there they had no choice but to shoot him.

Up until the police arrived she could do whatever she could to help, but once they were there she should have let them handle it.

No we do not, people making the Police job harder. If she had been shot the police would have been blamed. All she achieved was to make lethal force the only option.

Yes because now we'd be facing a huge bill for legal aid, court and police time, 20 years in prison etc etc.

How do you know she was making their job harder? Were you there?
Maybe she just happened to be in that place at that time? The whole thing (conversation between her and gunman) probably took seconds. Nobody knows. Point is, she did what she though was right at that point in time. She was obviously a very concerned citizen. Kudu's to her at trying to calm the situation. But calling her a stupid cow? come on!!! Its human nature to try and help others in need. I would like to think that most of us whould have probably have done the same thing.

It is similar to this scenario. I am/was a trained First Aid. Now at an accident situation I did all I could but as soon as the Paramedics/First responders arrive I do a quick brief and hand over and get well out of it unless asked otherwise.

Nope, she should not have  interfered. She was stupid for doing so. Hopefully they charge her with obstruction.

There was only one stupid person involved here.
