Question for the "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear" crowd,

So why do you have curtains at home?

Dumbest argument ever. I don't trust nor want my neighbours seeing my day to day activity, however, I am happy for the Government to do so in the interests of protecting our country.

Hypothetically, which of the following governments would you be happy with seeing your day-to-day activity in interest of protecting the country?

  1. One led by Bill English?
  2. One led by Winston Peters?
  3. One led by Donald Trump?
  4. One led by Kim Jong-un?

And you trust the Government to only do so in the interests of protecting our country? Not, for example, in the interests of protecting the Government? Or, for instance, in the interests of some foreign corporation or Government who have promised something to our Government in return?

Really????

Why would that be relevant? The comment I made relates to the fact you are suggesting my neighbour has equivalent reason to be privy to my private goings on as the Government might, which obviously isn't so.

I wish I could -1 many times :-)

Why, because it was me that said it, or because you trust politicians more than science?

The great thing about democracy is our votes cancel each other out. Maybe we just shouldn't bother.

@scuwp: ... oblivious to the different world outside ...

Unfortunately, NZ media publishers don't help the situation. There really is not enough media coverage of international events.

I support the Government in protecting our country, our people and interests. I give qualified support to the government with regards to assisting Allies with mutual defence and security.

The point being that you are happy with the government seeing your day-to-day activity because you are happy with the current government - but what if a future government was to be led by someone/regime you didn't trust?

You just select the opt out button?

Well, I don't know your neighbour. But, from my PoV, the Government is just my biggest neighbour.

So do I. I simply believe they need to prove to us that what they do works, and they don't do anything they don't need to do. That is, after all, the basis of a democracy.

Not sure why you'd think it would matter to me that you said it? I am not surprised it was you, but I would feel the same way no matter who wrote it.

For the sake of not derailing the thread, I am not going to get into specifics (again) of why I disagree with you on these points.

Not sure I agree it's the basis. What information do you want them to provide you and in what format?

exactly,  that is why I used "support" in place of 'trust'. Trust follows on from support and must be earned and maintained and never taken for granted.

Yes, that's fair.

Trust follows on from support and must be earned and maintained and never taken for granted.

...Which was exactly my point. :-)
