I would say GZ is absolutely social media (as are all online forums). It's not social networking, but internet forums easily slide into the definition of social media.

Ha ha , better not tell my kids about this new geekzone social media platform. The oldest at least, already spends too much time talking to his friends.

Humour aside, I certainly wouldn't refer to GZ as 'social media'.

If you told this to someone who does not know GZ, they would have an inaccurate impression.

My last non-smart phone was a tiny Samsung flip-phone. Fit in any pocket, seemed indestructible, battery lasted for many days. Not sure how cheap they were, we got them free as used/surplus phones from my wife's work.

Our son dropped one into salt water off the back of our boat. Water was only about 10 feet deep, was in the evening, son was bemused as to what the flashing light in the water was. Stripped it down, flushed in fresh water, dried it out on deck, put battery back in when it was dry, no problems.

I actually have a genuine original Nokia 3330 (pretty much the same as a 3310) in my desk. It's Orange branded, from the UK circa early 2000's. I do not seem to have the charger although it might be in a box somewhere. I doubt the phone would work on current networks anyway.

The one I would like them to re-issue was the 7110. Best phone I ever had. Just re-issue it as a modernised original - text and calls only would be fine, no data. The 5100 series was also pretty good.

My first mobile was a huge Motorola brick. Only one in the office, one of the sales folk used to borrow it until I caught him using it to call the front desk from the warehouse. It's amazing how quickly a $3000 monthly mobile phone bill accumulated in those days, at about $2 / minute.

I am with you on that. Instead I do have and currently keep that simple Nokia (did not bother looking into the model)

To support what I have mentioned earlier "if you important, they will call you..." - someone waked me up this morning (at about 10am) to discuss contracting jobs...

Nokia mobile - reliable, keeps the charge and I still have a number of good BL-5C batteries. But not using it for outgoing calls..

I don’t have a mobile. (Ok, I got a few old ones but no active sim card). Haven’t had one for a few years. Originally this was because there was no mobile coverage where we live (and there still isn’t). But now I just dont care.

I do have a question though, are there any banks that do internet banking 2 factor auth without requiring SMS?

BNZ doesn't use SMS, they have a 'Netguard' card.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

I can't think of anyone I know that doesn't have a mobile phone.

I can think of only one person that has a non-smart traditional mobile.

As I learn more about the 'evils' (my description) of big data and the ability of monopoly companies (eg. Facebook, Google) and country states to monitor civilians via their mobile data, I do think about opting out. But I just get too much utility out of mine to consider ditching it.

I can think of a few people I know without mobile phones. One of the volunteers at the local SPCA whom I work with. My neighbour and her son. (They don't have internet either.)

Can't think of any others off the top of my head.

SMS? Would prefer if they supported a 2FA app instead so I could access if overseas and using a different SIM. But yes, the card is very inconvenient.

But we're kinda off topic! ;-)

I hate SMS and find Netguard dead simple to use. Takes me about 10 seconds.

My mother. She says she doesn't know how to use it. Won't learn how to use it. Also gives her a headache. Or some other ailment. Can't see the screen properly. Won't use it.

Social media, IMO, has strong narcissistic themes, GZ has more of a hobby/enthusiasts theme.

I agree and that is part of why I don't do social media.

I'm usually far from an early adopter of anything new. That said I got my first mobile phone in 1998 and a smartphone is so convenient I simply won't do without now (I only got one at the end of 2012 when I felt the technology had matured sufficiently to be more benefit than mere gadget).

However, if you don't want a mobile phone to become a nuisance, you must train other people to only use it to ring you when it is absolutely necessary - dire emergency type thing. Otherwise, they should communicate with me in a non-intrusive manner like email or non-social media based apps like Viber or SIGNAL. To this end, many people I deal with have lost their direct calling privileges - they have been assigned a silent ringtone. I return their calls with an email asking if it was urgent. It almost never is.

Then there are the people that expect you to ring them rather than contact them by non-intrusive means. I have better things to do than talk on a telephone so they're the last cab off the rank for me. Fortunately, they are now few and far between.

Nice big bump!

A friend of mine had a scooter accident a while back. She fell off and was knocked unconscious.
She told me the meat wagon crew was able to use her thumb print to unlock her phone (that's pretty neat, I didn't know they could do that) and they contacted her boyfriend and parents to tell them she was on her way to hospital.

This got me thinking on what to do, should I end up in a similar situation. I came up with a bloody simple solution. I cut a piece of cardboard the size of a bank card and wrote my partner, mum and sister's names and contact phone numbers and stuck it in my wallet.

I had to find what the partner and sister's cellphone numbers were firstly as I never ring them. Mum has a cellphone but I think she only rarely uses it. It can be a pain in the butt to find someone's cellphone number when you don't use one yourself.
