After trying selfies with a phone & a small Panasonic waterproof camera I decided it was pointless because of shadows & other issues so went to Hanafins at the Riccarton Mall.    The guy used a very nice little mirrorless camera maybe a Fuji, & emailed the photo to me within 10 minutes.    Excellent no fuss service.      The photo was taken without any flash.      This was accepted for the passport no problem.   BTW the Riccarton Road Post Shop use a Canon 1000D with 50 mm f1.8 lens for their Real Me photos.   Such a fast lens they don't have to use a flash.

All the NZPs that do photos have the same kit btw.

However, flash no. But they all have electronic backing boards and top/below florescent lighting to ensure a shadowless flat (and not 1/30th shake) image (next time you are in check the bench, they are present) but often forget to replace them when blown etc :/

Face issues now with the requirement for different countries, some space limitations to walk forward/back to suit the fixed lens and I've seen a few moved from 1 side to the other due to window light casting - can't be done at some times of the day for a month :)
