I kinda liked it, mostly.

Whittaker is absolutely the Doctor, something of a combination of Tennant and Smith, although I don't like the final outfit, the raggedy clothes suited the character better I think.

I don't really like "sonic away your woes", there were generally quite a few plot issues and contrivances, in short the writing could be better.

But I liked it enough to look forward to next week.

I enjoyed it. Good mix of characters. Feels like they spent a lot less on this one compared to other opening episodes for previous doctors. Good story opening until it became a simple chase.

I liked it, to me each doctor is unique, so I don’t really have a best and worst. But I do like the new one and its great they kept her normal accent.

In the episode I did like the making of the new sonic driver. And I like the new outfit as well.

I'm super old school, so for me Dr Who will always be Peter Davison :D

What? No, no - Jon Pertwee.

Too weird having a female Dr Who

Jon Pertwee or Tom Baker for me. I think Tom Baker was probably the ultimate. Although Eccleston who only lasted the 1st season in the the latest reboot of Dr Who, was also good.

I liked it more on the second viewing. Jodie seems like a mix of Tennant and Smith.

Episode 4 seems to be a bit late this week?

That is because UK daylight savings ended on Sunday morning. The episode is broadcast on BBC One at 7pm, which is 8am in NZDT. TVNZ put it online at 8:50am, which is when the UK broadcast finished.

Yeah, it does seem a bit too PC and overly preachy at times.

Also, I understand that every Doctor has their own personality, but she is just a little too happy and hopeful. While that has been part of previous Doctors, they generally have something of a dark side as well - I'm not seeing any of that with Whittaker (yet). See the closing sequence of "The Family of Blood" from the Tennant era, that's some dark vengeful sh*t right there.

I watched ep2&3 over the weekend. It's a festival of northern accents compared to previous series'.

In some places this feels like a return to the 'problem solving' and 'moral dilemma' storylines of the 70s-80s compared to the later series monster/chase type storylines. I like the new doctor, less overacting gives the story more room to breathe.

I agree with your comment that the Doctor's dark side is semingly absent in the latest series. However I regard this as a most welcome return to character, and to me it's much more in keeping with the original versions of the series.

I’m finding the writing dreadful, stories pretty boring, and am going to struggle to bother watching much more. Speaking as a long term fan since Pertwee. I have a sinking feeling it’s going to get cancelled

I think the new cast is a good one, and I have no issues with the casting. The special effects are also pretty good, and much better that Dr Who of yore, for instance the realism of the giant spiders was pretty impressive.

However, that being said, I'm close to giving up on watching it. I think the writing and the plots are bad, verging on terrible. Far too preachy, moralising and politically correct for my stomach. I want something escapist entertaining that I can chill out to, and which surprises me from time to time. Instead this series seems to be a series of moralising tales based on contemporary political issues (racism in america, evil capitalists making a quick buck by dumping industrial waste.....), which makes it more irritating than entertaining. If I wanted that sort of entertainment, I could just watch a Green Party campaign video instead.

Plus, I find it a bit irritating that every hole in the plot is "magicked" over with the wondrous all-singing all-dancing sonic screwdriver, which is becoming very over-used as a plot device.

Overall:

  • Casting 8/10
  • Special effects 9/10
  • Plots 5/10
  • Writing 3/10
