Matariki for me is a time of contemplation. Ending it with fireworks doesn't seem quite right to me. I am no expert in these matters.

The anniversary of the Gunpower Plot is exactly the right time to be celebrating with fireworks.

I don't care what the naysayers believe, it's part of my culture and worthy of preservation.

For myself, I am thankful that I have the opportunity to be reminded how difficult it was to develop parliamentary democracies. While I don't see democracy as ideal, I do think that we fail to value what we have and we would certainly value it more if someone tried to destroy our houses of parliament while the government is sitting. Such an attack is no longer an unthinkable scenario.

It wont get us past the key issue. We all want everything, it needs to suits us, and there is not enough money to have it all now. So we blame those we voted in. If they increased taxes to pay for it, we complain. Or, we complain as they haven't fixed everything yesterday. When we bleat about each party, its just the order that everything is not happening, differs slightly

Yes. At least those people follow due process. They are just regular Kiwis, like everyone else, the issue isn't with MP's. The issue is expectation of the rest of us. Thats too high so we blame 121 people in Welly.

In the vein of 'any one who wants the job shouldn't have it'.

I think it's got merit but I have serious doubts about randomly selected people being up to the job. For example, the nutjob who attacked James Shaw in the street.

We all know certain friends and family who would do an exemplary job if selected for parliament, who would take it seriously, read the background material and debate the issues with an open mind. But how would we select these candidates and keep it fair?

Some kind of public poll you say..........

What about we scrap celebrating Guy Fawkes and replace it with celebrating Matariki, the reasons being

1) it’s wetter so lower fire risk
2) it’s darker earlier so kids go to bed at a decent time
3) it’s a New Zealand event

If setting low quality unreliable firearms off with kids nearby or actually doing it, burning property, injuring people, is all ok, then lets continue. Or it can be enjoyed without that risk that always causes problems. Safety doesn't matter all the time I guess. But we do need to add the costs onto the fireworks so when the damage is done, the taxpayers arent paying it. The retailers who make money from it collect the insurance levy. I think thats a great idea

With public displays of fireworks folks have the option to attend or not. With open sales to all the individuals right to opt out is taken away, not just one time but multiple times spread over months.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Then we just end up with another celebration, and those of us who are staunch Guy Fawkes supporters would stockpile them. Diwali seems to be just before Guy Fawkes each year, and from the noise around here, it's clear people don't have an issue with buying them 12 months in advance for such celebrations. That is of course unless they are being permitted to sell at other times, but I'm not aware of that happening, even though there are provisions for it.

But most people don’t do a massive stockpile overall there would be a shift to the winter.

If the Government were to ban the sale of fireworks to individuals it should coincide with a ban on the individual use of fireworks. Leaving the only legal use being public displays by licensed providers.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
