OK - it looks to me like Will Smith was reluctant to do/say anything, but was spurred on (by the evil side-eye) by his adulterous and controlling wife (who is herself accused of being a sexual predator, as has been widely reported) to do something

He strolled up, thinking it through and decided that he couldn't back out and knew a punch, from a trained fighter (yes, he did a lot of fight training for various roles) would be serious assault. a half-hearted slap and some classless shouting was what he settled on.

Someone with a better thought process may have handled it differently - like Denzel or similar - but he didn't.

Now there have to be consequences. It took away from the awards he and everyone else received. It dirtied the show with violence (mild or not) and it is now the talk of the world.

I think perhaps he should keep his best actor gong, but be publicly censured in some form by the Academy. Maybe a suspension from the membership?

The vocalist Alsina referred to in that article age would have been 22 at the time? That's an odd accusation against Pinkett-Smith if that's it?

Given the movie Smith just made I figured part of his behavior may have been a method acting hangover. He would not be the first actor to be affected by something like that after living in a role intensely. He did win an Oscar for it.

gzt: Overall it's good publicity for Smith and his movie imo. I had seen it advertised and forgotten about it. I will be 100% watching it now.
Not seeing how have some who assaults people is good publicity?

Normally studios would be distancing themselves

It's increased my awareness of the movie and I'm going to watch it. More than that, Smith has been seen as a nice guy actor imo. Lately he's been taking on increasingly dramatic roles away from typecast. The way the Hollywood system works this incident is likely to shift perception and see him offered the kind of roles he wants to get into as a serious actor. Imo. Not that he needed something like this. The next movie he's signed for is super intense.

Sorry but a man slapping another man can never be badass, whichever end of the spectrum one looks at it: it's either toxic masculinity or he fights like a girl.

The message it sends is: "You aren't even worth punching"

But it's the calmly walking up and then calmly walking back whilst adjusting the suit that I thought was badass.

The Oscars hit their worst ever ratings last year and talk over its relevance where prevalent. If this year was also a flop it would have been rather bad news for the franchise.

This year however ratings are up 50% and nearly any media containing those actors or Oscars footage, (even excluding the slap itself) have been viewed, shared and commented on millions of times the world over.

You cannot deny the tremendous benefit of this event for those involved. Furthermore, it's not a fizzle in the pan you know damn well the media's going to milk this for weeks to come.

Like it or not this (potentially) a net win for the Oscars and the actors involved.

ROFL, no it doesn't. It says 'I know if I punch you with a closed fist and do serious damage, I'm gonna get in so much more trouble. Slapping you makes it clear I'm not happy but won't land me in prison.

You can kill someone with a punch, even accidentally but slap, not as much.

It's easy enough to throw a soft punch that makes the point but doesn't even bruise.  This is the expectation in the competition aspects of some martial arts.

I still can't understand why there was no security when this occurred. If someone was to heckle someone from the crowd verbally, security guards would likely come in and escort the person out. Why didn't that occur here for an action that was far far worse He should have been escorted out by security as soon as it occurred. It just made no sense on multiple levels what happened.

Because its the fricking Oscars,  and the celeb A-listers in the front rows are gonna go bat-$hit if they start seeing security (presumably armed) watching over them...

Probably shows double standards then that occurs over there. But guessing there would be plenty of security there, and if they saw an alleged assault take place IMO it would make sense that they would have at least gone to the front  of the theater and talked to them. They didn't necessary know who allegedly assaulted the guy on the stage, it could have been someone who snuck into the theater.  People watching on TV may have seen it all, but security may have only seen it occur from certain angles. But I am glad WS has owned it and has said he made a mistake and it should have never happened. It is just a bizarre thing to happen. Reminds me of the night they read out the wrong best picture winner.

Still think he's a douche. My initial thought when I heard the joke was because she's very muscular but yeah. The Academy should thank for his apology, take back his award and ban him.
