Eva888: Can’t help thinking that all this multi rise infill housing Councils are encouraging to be built behind existing homes is adding to the problem of over stretching the underground infrastructure and it’s not just nature’s fault.

How? If there was only 1 house in Auckland there’d still be the same amount of water to move.

Permeable area has very little impact with that amount of water.

Hydrological ground pressure seems to have lifted and tilted the whole slab foundation.
A new one for me never knew it was a thing, apart from earthquakes.

interesting footage. i wonder what that black plastic is in the ground and why its there. it almost looks like moisture barrier instead of geotek fabric.

it really sucks for the people, hard to find housing as it is.

it is moisture barrier you put it under a slab

So, what's Mr Brown doing today? He doesn't get out "with the buckets", so what is he doing instead? Anything of value?

I'll bite.

Hopefully using his skill doing something that no-one else can do. If he's out in the trenches doing what anyone else can, then who's being the mayor? Surely this, and other issues need addressing that were there before Friday?

To @XPD, that's gutting to watch! Our newly renovated granny flat flooded too, so I can empathise. I hope your insurance covers you fully!

looks a bit to deep for that and it doesn't usually extend past the slab, especially the outer ring footing.

In a country that has just had it's warmest, wettest winter on record and warmest year on record, both in 2022, it's not unreasonable to ask how well prepared we are for extreme weather events.

This is old news. To sit on the fence, lets spend gazillions and nothing happens. Lets ignore it, and this happens. Dont go down the blame game route. Then blame when "it" happens. If the country got in behind the long term issues, we can push forward. But even them you cannot foresee this event. At a minimum, national and local Govt can talk re next season

Yes this is old news. The oil companies have known about Climate Change since at least the 1980s, if not a lot earlier.

However, I suspect that talking about Climate Change to Wayne Brown, isn't going to work very well, because to acknowledge Climate Change, implies a requirement for expenditure on prevention and mitigation strategies. He was elected on a campaign of cost cutting.

Perhaps this was one reason for his unwillingness to declare a state of emergency until almost midnight on Friday, even though the requirement was obvious to many much earlier.

The timeline is a shocker.

Shouldn’t this be in politics? It doesn’t get much more blatantly political than Bomber.

Its the same old issue. Why spend $ on a once in a "x" event. Inefficient. It probably wont happen. But if you look at the world, its a slam dunk.Review La Nina and El Nino, its not out of the blue. Historically those two weather phenomena do cause issues and its well known. Factor in climate change and here we are. If a new Govt or Council saod lets spend X$ on this for the future, rates or tax are up, they lose votes. NZ and probably every other democracy will act late

He could find a problematic water flow and lie down in front of it, I'm pretty sure he has the qualifications to be a wet sandbag.

I just got that too, wonder why that didn't happen on Friday when there was (obviously) an issue?

My phone says we're expecting 6mm of rain tonight? Glad they sent the emergency alert for that. Makes complete sense that they didn't send it for the 300mm that we received on Friday night!

i think the intensity and speed caught them out. there was nothing all that bad on the rain radar. a bit of flooding in heavy rain is expected, no one expected that amount in such a short time period.

I'm expecting Wayne Brown to call an emergency press conference next month to tell us to stay safe.
