It'll have an optical, but it won't offer the HD Audio formats as it won't pass audio through HDMI.
I have heard one before, for 2 channel audio playback, it was very much found wanting.
It IS a lot better than home theatre in the box, but yeah, well, you do get what you pay for.

riahon: I thought I saw one retailer with Boxing Day discounts on Apple products (want another laptop). I can't seem to find it now, was I dreaming?

i think the harvey norman adds has an "includes apple computers" footnote.  whether that is both laptops and desktops... who knows.  catalogs here:

Yeh they usually are open on normal saturdays and sundays at the one in sylvia park mall. I've been to the mall on boxing day before, but never had to go to the bank so I dont know what they do on boxing day.

I got a Dyson DC29 vacuum, and Dyson Air Multiplier.

I felt the 4.9 quake here too, it was still strong in Timaru.

Noel Leeming list Sony KDL40NX710 at $2399.20, Harvey Norman for $3980. Is Noel Leeming price a mistake??

Judging by the fact Bond and Bond also have it at the same price I doubt it's a mistake.

Remember Harvey Norman have what is probably NZ's highest retail margins for electronics. Their business model relies heavily around interest free deals and being able to haggle with their staff over prices if you want a good cash deal.

What I have found frustrating today is the way (some) retailers apply the discounts... for example 25% percent off small appliances, but then when you go to buy a small appliance they give a much lower discount and say, oh sorry, but that brand typically makes washing machines, so you only get the (lower) discount that comes off washing machines.

got a nice printer and blender from HN, bit strange though as they hadn't updated prices so they just had people wondering round with vivids writing sale prices on items when you picked them up.

Got a $448 32" samsung for the bedroom from Harveys - I was there at 8am and was passed by 3 of them leaving as I entered the store. They went like hot cakes!

I didn't bother with the boxing day sales this year. There didn't look to be the fantastic types of deals like the last few years. I think there may be some better ones in the new years sales, although I don't think the shops have the big inventory due to the recession.
