The igniter on our 13yo Weber BBQ packed a sad a few years ago. Back then, I made a half-hearted attempt to fix it without success - so have been using a gas-powered stick/wand thingy. No problem.

However just had a proper try to fix it. Inside the removable push-button, which holds the AAA battery, there are copper contacts which had heavy deposits of blue oxidation on them. This may have been caused by an earlier battery going rotten while in there.

I tried to remove the oxidation with fine sandpaper then got heavy-handed with the sharp point of a pair of nail scissors. Scratched most of it off, inserted a new battery - and clickclickclick. Job’s a good ‘un. Love fixing stuff.

From tomorrow, the USB-C socket will be the standard for new, wireless devices throughout the EU (with certain exceptions). 😊

I finally managed to play Catan whist on holiday with my family. Took a bit of getting used to, but I really enjoyed it.  Was particularly pleased to win, coming back from from last place to win in a single movement getting 4 points in 1 go!

For power, sharp today? Everything that transmits somehow. Powerbanks do not transmit, so they are excluded. But I’m sure they will have USB-C as well. No proprietary Apple Lightning anymore. 😉

The USB C rule is meaningless unless they enforce actually complying with USB c power delivery as so much stuff just swaps out the socket and needs a usb a to c cable or passive 5v charger to work.

No, it must be ensured that PD is supported. An adapter cable is not enough. The directive now also stipulates a common basic charging protocol for all USB-C devices. Laptops/Notebooks have to comply with begin of 2026 as well. As of today, for example, you can only buy/order the iPhone 15+16 directly from Apple itself (as a manufacturer) here. No iPhone 14 or SE 2022 anymore (so expect a SE 2025 in a few month 😉). Retailers are still allowed to sell off their stocks.

Additionally, discarded and unused chargers generate around 11,000 tonnes of electronic waste in the EU every year. 😕

Hmmm - that’s really personal and quite uncalled for here on GZ. I’ve always been disgusted and disappointed by Aussies’ jokes along these lines about Kiwis and sheep. 😁

No I had LOTS of cards so I built 3 roads (Which gave me 2 points from the longest road bonus, upgraded a settlement to

A city and put my then spare settlement in between some of the roads I'd built. I was praying no one least of all me would throw a 7. I went from 4th to win in a single turn.

Planning a small DIY project, I needed to know “How far from the centre of a 40 mm diameter circle is a chord that’s 35 mm long.”

I could have worked from first principles with my schoolboy maths to get the answer but TBH that would have taken me quite some time. So I put the question into ChatGPT and got the answer immediately - 9.68 mm - along with all the workings and logic. Very cool.

We always play without the 7 rule, particularly when kids are involved, it makes the game about cooperation rather than attacking other players.

For people who didn't understand the wood for sheep joke:

"He's got to be doing this on purpose".

My average step count this year is 5000 more than last year. I've put an emphasis on my fitness this year and feel much better for it. I'd still like to lose some more weight but it's been a good year.
