Dune part two at the movies last night.

uite well, although I think another few hours would be required to completely reveal everything that is going on among the great houses.

I want more. I need a conclusion. I know it's being written. But I want the movie and I want it soon.

Just read Dune Messiah, we all know where its going and how badly it is going to end,

Frank Herbert was never one to write that heroic figures should be followed blindly, (no pun intended)

"Bob Marley: One Love" - 8/10. I expected this movie to be terrible. It was excellent all the way. The music is a big part of it and excellent. I had a lounge seat which definitely helped getting into it. I wondered how much of the audience picked up the Jamaican lingo - it is not necessary at all to enjoy the movie. Produced by Plan B Entertainment, Brad Pitt's company. It's a great story. Just like the Beatles you could make a movie about each of the Wailers and have tons of material left over.

Dune Part 2 (Event Cinemas) - 9/10

I took my partner to see this after showing her part 1 the night before (and this after she read the book late last year).  It was a fantastic adaptation in my view, tackling that Herculean task of bringing to the big screen a literary epic.  There is almost no way to adequately cover all the detail and nuance in Frank Herbert's novel, and so I recognise that they had to make choices and selections in what they focussed on.  Ultimately, I think they did the right thing.  I really hope they do continue on with this adaptation and move on to Dune Messiah after this.

Timothee Chalamet brings a lot of presence to the role of Paul, and the way you can seem him vacillating over his "destiny" is compelling.  He understands Paul is not the hero and brings that to his performance.  The same goes for Rebecca Ferguson as Jessica.  As someone else said, Javier Bardem steals every scene he is in.  Zendaya as Chani is great, but I felt like her relationship with Paul felt more conflicted than it was intended to be.  My partner was confused why Paul took Irulan as his wife, when he had just professed his love for Chani.  It comes across clearer in the books how Paul and Chani are with each other, but in the movie there is more friction which isn't really explored.  Maybe that will come out more in any subsequent films.

Cinematography is excellent, as is the sound.  Length felt about right too.  It will be interesting to run this as a double feature/marathon when it comes out on digital in due course.

Poor Things by Yorgos Lanthimos.

Superbly bonkers, you'll love it or hate it. I loved it. 9.5/10

I worried at first that this would be an example of "The Emperor's New Clothes", all hype and total failure to deliver.

I couldn't be more wrong. One of the most beautifully bonkers films I've ever seen and Emma Stone deserves all of the accolades. I'm sure it would suit everyone, but approach it with an open sensibility, and at the very least enjoy the amazing set and costume design.

I enjoyed the movie although I noticed the heavy push on the religious aspect more than I recall in the books. There seemed less focus on the guild navigators who really hold the power as without them there is no space travel and whoever holds the power over the navigators holds the real power (i.e. whoever controls the spice).

Cast-wise I thought everyone did a stellar job except for two exceptions - Javier Bardem didn't do it for me. As a leader I expect someone with more authority rather than comic relief. The big exception for me though was Christopher Walken - I love the guy but I thought he was horribly miscast as the Emperor. Was half expecting him to start telling a story about a watch or to dance around a deserted hotel lobby.

Arrival (2016) 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc 9/10

Linguistics professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) leads an elite team of investigators when gigantic spaceships touch down in 12 locations around the world. As nations teeter on the verge of global war, Banks and her crew must race against time to find a way to communicate with the extraterrestrial visitors. Hoping to unravel the mystery, she takes a chance that could threaten her life and quite possibly all of mankind.

I tried to watch this film several years ago on Blu-ray 1080p in a brightly lit room. Big mistake. The film is already quite dark, but coupled with the bright room and the TV I had at the time, it was unwatchable. I made a mental note to try it again at a later date. So, after the "arrival" (pun intended) of my 4K Blu-ray disc, it was time to revisit it and I'm so glad that I did.

There are no Light Sabers, Lasers or Blasters to be seen in this film, its just a well made Sci-Fi film from the directorial genius of Denis Villeneuve. I was captivated by Louise's (Amy Adams) story of her attempts to communicate with alien beings and the constant flashbacks to her time with her daughter. What did it all mean? Arrival has an unexpected twist that left me gob smacked.

The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing. I can also throw in my vote for that particular award. My subwoofer has never had a better workout.

Dune 2, Reading New Lynn Titan XC 9/10

Firstly my wife and I watched part one at home and while I continued to enjoy it, she was surprised she enjoyed it a lot more the second time round. I have been twice to see part two and chose Reading New Lynn for price ($16.50 standard weekend) and hoped the larger screen and Dolby Atmos sound would be good enough and I was not disappointed. So much so that I went back the second time. I avoided the trailers and comments as much as I could, and I thought it was an excellent movie. Amazing sound especially the music, Hans Zimmer did an incredible job with this. I agree with the previous comments on cast, don’t think any Oscars for acting but overall a stellar job. Highly recommend the movie and this theatre, sound quality in the Titan XC was very impressive, and this movie sound and music was 10/10. People clapping, lots of chatter after it and whole family enjoyed it.

Thinking of going again. Will pic this up on Blu-ray.

They Cloned Tyrone - Netflix

It's pretty rubbish.
I think it's supposed to be an attempt at a faux-blaxploitation film, but it just falls a bit flat.

3/10 at the most

Road House (2024) - Prime Video

I liked it. It's got it's flaws but I found it entertaining enough for a evening where I can park my brain up for the night.

It's copped the usual flak about how the original didn't need a remake. As a kid growing up in the 80's on movies like Robocop, Aliens, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, etc.... the original Roadhouse wasn't a masterpiece and doesn't hold a candle to any of the aforementioned real classics. They could have avoided this criticism by saying it's a sequel and calling it Road House: Florida Keys instead. It's different enough to not be a remake.

The plot is pretty basic but you can say the same about John Wick. Jake Gyllenhaal is great as the lead, no complaints there. The rest of the cast are just fill-ins, nothing particularly special. One notable exception was Conno McGregor - he's a prime example of why sports stars shouldn't act. It's like Fat Bastard (from Austin Powers) went on a diet and became an MMA fighter. God awful.

Fight scenes were good - have to suspend your belief but that's fairly standard for action movies. I liked the setting in Florida. Music was ok with a different live band playing every night. At 2 hours long it is long for an action movie but I didn't notice the length too much.

It's not a classic but it certainly doesn't deserve the low scores it's getting.

6.5/10

I rate it 10/10 at IMAX Queensgate, Lower Hutt, because the visuals and audio made up for the weaknesses in characterisation, storyline, pacing and action.

We sat upright in the centre of the fourth row from the screen. The three hours went so quickly and I didn’t have any discomfort or vision problems from having my eyes “glued to the screen” for most of that time. The natural desert scenes looked the most amazing.

It was so good being up close to the speakers that I won’t be sitting further back in future. The seats shake quite a lot and made it a visceral experience particularly during spacecraft and aircraft landings. The music sounded excellent.

Acting was excellent but not impressed with the one on one fighting.

I agree that the movie doesn’t give as good an understanding of the politics and religions as the book does. But I suspect that they are choosing to concentrate on a few themes for each movie so, for example, the spice navigators will be more central to the next movie.

I just watched Dune (1984) and rate it 8/10 in 1984, 6/10 today.

It gave me a much better sense of the politics and religious aspects. The acting was not excellent and the one-one-one fighting was worse but I found the movie to be more entertaining returning the book’s weirding battles and avoiding the moody introspection of the 2021/2024 versions.

Roadhouse 2024.

The worst movie I've seen in 5 years. Awful, just so, so bad. Incoherent. It gets a star for a couple of saving moments in the movie 2/10.

Wonka.
Timbo Chalamet was good. In fact he was very good.
Only issue I had with it was the lack of continuity with the Depp film. Different backstory etc.

Still very enjoyable.

Really ?  Me and my boys thoroughly enjoyed watching Colin McGregor play an over the top version of himself, great stuff ... not sure what the plot was really about but we found it fun :-)
