Its my sister's birthday today, she lives in Brisbane. I sent her a message wishing her a happy birthday and asking if she'd received the gift that I'd sent her (note:  we haven't bought gifts for each other for 30yrs).

She replied: "The cyclone, no it hasn't landed yet".

She knows me too well!!

The elderly husband of a good friend of Mrs Code is an American - married to his Kiwi wife and they live here.

His elderly American sister married a Greek guy later in life and they live/d in the US. Apparently it was a very happy marriage but weirdly the Greek guy never discussed his Greek financial situation with his wife. All she knew was that he owned a property on a touristy Greek island - they travelled there frequently for holidays. He died recently.

Now his wife needs to travel to the Greek island to try to sort out the financial affairs of his estate. She has invited her brother to join her there from NZ to assist. Neither of them has any real legal knowledge.

They will effectively be starting from scratch and have no idea what they will find - eg. they don’t know:

  • if there is a Will
  • whether he owned any other property or assets
  • whether there may be other potential beneficiaries (eg former wife/wives and/or kids) who may come out of the woodwork
  • whether there is a lawyer on the island they can work with - or whether they will have to do this on the mainland.

I find all this very interesting. Apart from anything else it could be the basis for a great script for a reality TV series or a drama series along the lines of Mamma Mia or Shirley Valentine - or even The White Lotus. Sell the rights.

@eracode your friend would be wise to join an expat site for foreigners in Greece for some local support and to get a few recommendations of lawyers and other relevant information. There are sure to be members that have gone through such a scenario. One site is called Greece is Home.

Also turn up with a current marriage certificate and death certificate stamped and Apostilled not just notarised. There are sure to be relatives that will turn up especially if there is land involved and they may have been utilising the land for farming. They have strange laws that allow land that is utilised for a period of time by anyone to become theirs if the real owner has ignored it for a number of years. I don’t envy her position. Luckily most young people speak English in government organisations so target them at counters, not the old one waiting to retire.

@Eva888 I put up that post only because I thought it was an interesting story and wasn't specifically looking for, or expecting, advice - but that sounds like excellent advice. Much appreciated thanks - I'll ask Mrs Code to pass it on.

We’ve bought a new house, well a holiday home for now until move later in the year.

It has a Mitsubishi heat pump and I was keen to buy a suitable WiFi adapter as we’ve gotten so used to using WiFi to control the heat pumps in our main home. I looked up the model to make sure I ordered the correct WiFi adapter to find that it has WiFi built in!

Score!

America increases customs duties by 25%, I reduce orders at amazon to 25%. Let's see which of us wins - Bezos or me. 😁

Dave Armstrong's satire pieces often make me smile.  I though today's one about Wellington Water was particularly well done.

My son's 20th birthday this month and when asked what he wanted/needed, he was pretty keen on going to see Slipknot - but preferred the idea of going with me (so that's now become my birthday present as well!).
Nice that he still wants to go places with his old man.
So that's our Tuesday evening sorted this evening.

Picture for reference, in case some don't know who/what Slipknot are:

Also made me smile that my lovely wife won some tickets on Facebook to the sold-out Shihad gig on Friday.
Date night with 10k others...marvellous!

It almost certainly won't be the restaurants or the drivers that are winning.

Those garage door overlays are pretty dang awesome .

Seen a few different ones over the years, think I even saw them advertised in the China tat markets...

Ditto with 3D coverings for bathroom and toilet floors...

Some are truly vertigo inducing . ..
