sir1963:

We currently get 48% of our energy needs from Fossil fuels.

Electricity supply 24%

Those numbers aren't set in stone. We could comfortably add more renewal generation. There's been a bunch consented but not much built over the last twenty years.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_power_stations_in_New_Zealand#Proposed_power_stations

Ironically there is a huge amount of opposition to new major projects (especially hydro) from environmental groups and the choice is basically either we build it or we keep relying on fossil fuels to do the job for us. Pick one.

I just listened to Stuart Nash being interviewed (more like grilled) on breakfast radio as Police Minister. It was concerning the level of lawless behaviour in HB (dirty scumbags). I was impressed (which in itself is saying something) with his engagement and attitude in getting on top of it. So good to have a proper Police Minister again.

Yes, there has been quite a few arrests. Busy, pop them in custody until they find time to deal with them, as happened in ChCh EQ looters. IIRC they spend many weeks if not a month or 3 inside, re stealing gas bottles

Terrifying to think there are 59 arrests and presumably a lot more getting away with that kind of thing.

Yep why prep for diasaters when people can come and loot your stuff.  You also need "arm" yourself with a home defense plan as well.

@caffynz:

Our power was affected by both the flooding-related weather, and Cyclone Gabrielle.
We are now considering a generator - for advice/tips can I ask here on this thread or should I set up a new off-topic thread?

On-topic, but not as serious...

Went mountain biking at Orere Point (440 Mountain Bike Park) yesterday. It's on the back side of the Hunua Ranges.

We arrived around lunchtime to do an afternoon there.

Surprisingly, it was quite dusty - then there was a short rain squall that came through.

An indicator of just how waterlogged the ground is - instead of settling the dust, that small bit of rain turned most of the trails into hydroslides!

I went down one of their more famous trails - Pink Stoat - and ended up on my back sliding down the trail and through a couple of berms, like I was at a waterpark!!

I guess it serves as a reminder - we may have a couple of days of nice weather, with the ground surface drying enough for us to forget the big wet, but it doesn't mean the ground has recovered.

Absolute carnage.

There was a downpour on Saturday in an extremely localised part of Auckland - we got a few spits but could see the 'shower curtain' moving across the city from South to North.

Metservice picked up 29mm over two hours on the Auckland Central data, but we only got a few spits driving from East to West on our way home.

Was also interesting to see the usual summer heat upwell effect on the Waitakeres doing its thing yesterday, there was a brief shower in Massey as a result.

Picture of a Chain gang picking up all the slash by hand comes clearly to mind.

We've lost hot water in West Auckland. Unsure if it's a bjorked cylinder or power shaping by Vector as they work on other bits of Auckland with storm damage.

Broken pilot wire somewhere, absurdly old system that they should have moved off with the change to smart meters.

They may send their sparky out if you log a fault to bypass the relay so its always on hot water.

We purchased a ToolPRO Inverter Generator 2200W from Supercheap, should be enough to cycle (one at a time) through fridge, then vertical freezer and then electronics/tv/charge devices/led lights.

Noticed ( ) that the price has dropped from $949.00 pre cyclone to $799.00 now. Suggest do get an invertor generator as although lower power for cost will not fry your electronics.

what's the size of this generator?

Specs here: remember generators are rated in peak output and this would not do 2200W continuously

Solar or if you are in the country side in the right area small wind turbines or micro hydro-power. As the climate becomes less predictable there is a need to switch to distributed power systems with increased resilience.

Electricity is actually better in some ways than petrol/diesel as if you are cut off you can generate your own. Rather than being reliant on external parties to provide it to you, and hoping the natural disaster doesn't take out the storage or distribution facilities.

This.

A solar panel array, EV and/or house battery sounds like an ideal self-reliance set up.

Not cheap at the moment, but ideal.

At the very least you'd be able to keep the fridge/freezer going and be mobile without relying on an external source.

That small wind turbine would need to be pretty robust, though. 😃

A highly distributed system with numerous small nodes is a robust system.

Micro generation at the household level should be seriously encouraged both as means of increasing resilience and reducing carbon emissions.

Why has no-one mentioned a Stirling generator? Solar, fossil, biomass, 100 proof vodka, anything that produces heat. No need to choose.

My friends in Hawke's Bay regardless of political views pretty much froth when you mention his name. He seems to be very unpopular with a lot of the locals because of the way he's (not) dealing with the gangs. The general consensus seems to be that the police should be shooting them on sight.

They don't use Ripple Control? I actually learned a short while ago that the ripple control receiver has a toggle switch which can be forced open and prevent the "off-peak" circuit from disabling in response to the ripple signal - though doing so is highly illegal unless you're a sparky or power network engineer. (Worked out because I had a sparky looking at my HWS and he was trying to work out why there was no power through the isolator until I asked "does it matter if there's a controlled load circuit" - apparently the answer is very much yes).
